so the white clusters have problems? Cause i perfer the look, but tonycash sold my cluster so i need to hunt another that probably wont be close to my odometer reading.
So how do you mod it to put the correct mileage in?
Thanks guys, a speedy reply would be nice since i bought alot of stuff from tony this morning and he will be shipping it tomorrow. I could add an orange cluster to it if i act fast.

I also took out the colored plastic piece that covers the bulbs and that also helps.90 Festy (Larry)--B6M (Matt D. modified B6 head), header, 5-speed, Capri XR2 front brakes, many other little mods

2) Is there a way to turn the mileage back without breaking anything?
The Jap imports that New Zealand seems to run on have heaps of problems with clocked speedo's ( winding them back ) and then charging the punters premium prices for vehicles that have travelled in the worst cases up to 300,000kms with about 80,000kms on the clock..... so it must be easy....when buying Jap imports they now supply a certificate guaranteeing no odometer tampering and that includes electronic versions as well."all I ask is the chance to prove that money won't make me happy":simon:

The orange faced clusters can be set to correct the mileage by removing a screw, pulling out a small gear, a circlip, rotating the drum to the correct mileage, then reversing procedure. Because I have changed all my L's to LX's, with the Tach clusters, I have always corrected the mileage on the odometer.
The White face clusters are made tamper proof. You dont have the screw hold down like the early ones. They are sealed and would require you to melt the barrel holding fixture enough to release it to set the mileage to correction. As I understand it, this has been done successfully, but it would be more difficult.Have owned 9 so far

so just got an orange cluster with 136K miles on it and mine is 162K so i need to change it. But whenever it was pulled the plastic turn in piece that holds the bulb broke so im thinking i can use my non tach cluster wiring and plug it in.
Anyway anyone try LED bulbs? And if so how many LEDs would work? Looking at this site

The only thing i dont see is the "circlip" what is that and how do you remove it?

I was just kidding... I don't know, but I am sure there is an easier way than to sit there turning a gear for 32K miles...The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

Pull the circlip that is on the end of the drum out, then CAREFULLY ease the individual number wheels that direction one at a time until they are free, and can be rotated to the correct number. After you have all the corrected numbers in place, reverse the process starting at the highest (100,000) to lowest numbers sliding them back until they engage. Then use a pair of needlenose to reinstall the circlip, slide the gear back into the body, move the other gear meshing it with the green one, the the metal retaner held by the screw.
You may have to play with it some to get the numbers to line up as they turn over so they stay straight. Just use some patience, and it gets easier now you have done it before.
When you go to mount your new cluster, dont forget to move your speedo cable from the center hole to the right side of the column reinforcement. Just pull it out toward the front of the car from the engine compartment side enough to move it over, then reverse that process. This is a good time to check your transaxle fluid too since the gear will be out. That is also your dipstick. Just don't use the tab on that adapter the has the bolt to pry on. It WILL snap off. If you run into trouble, let us know. It really isn't bad to do any of this after this first time.

The lighting is all interchangeable. 194 bulbs in all the 1/4 turn sockets on the printed board, # 73 in the top. You can try the LEDs too if you wish. Sam said he found strips of them at McParts stores.Last edited by m715; 10-20-2009, 08:29 AM.Have owned 9 so far
