i swapped my gauge cluster with a lower mileage and cleaner one and the tach. does not work now. im confused i think the car was a 90 L-Plus and i own a 90 L-plus. could it just be the cluster?

Was the tach working before in your car? The title suggests that it was working and then it quit. If it never worked in your car, make sure that the black plug (left side) that connects to your gauge cluster has a yellow/green wire. That's the one that brings the signal from the coil.Oscar

yes it was working in my old cluster and this one it does not. i will check the wire in the morning1973 Cb750 haven't touched it yet with no idea what I am planning on doing with it

It could be that the screw that makes contact on the back of the cluster was once removed and never put back in. It may look something like this:

i got it working. i just manually moved the tach pointer once and then back to 0 and pluged it in and it started working1973 Cb750 haven't touched it yet with no idea what I am planning on doing with it

Great! I'm glad you didn't waste your money on a broken cluster.The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!
