  • Low idle problem

Ok, so my 92 GL has had this problem since I got it. Sometimes when I go to take off, it's like the throttle doesn't recognize me pushing the accel. ped. It dies which makes me feel like an idiot and makes other people think I don't know how to drive a stick. Even if you let out super slow, the car doesn't idle fast enough to move the car. It just dies. Now, on the other hand, once you get going, this thing gets quick. It doesn't really "get quick" until higher RPMs though. At first it is like a dog, but when the rpms go up, it picks up and moves. Could this be a fuel pressure regulator? I don't think it is the fuel pump, because it still gets the fuel, just not as much as I think it should, and with higher rpms, it gets plenty. At first, I was thinking TPS, but I changed it out with another, and it had the same problem. It may be a coincidence and maybe they were both bad, but I don't know. I am just getting tired of having to start it back up in the middle of the road at a green light. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Ok, it's getting worse! Now it dies just sitting there idling if it is in gear at a stop light. As soon as you put it in gear, it idles so low it dies. I had a problem with it the other day that I did not put on here. The alt. belt came off while I was on my way home. I noticed it soon enough that the temp gauge only got about 3/4 of the way up. I let it sit overnight in a parking lot, and came back the next day to replace it. I replaced it right there, and ever since, it has a ticking noise. I don't think it got hot enough to do any damage, but I'm not sure. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Curious if you can tell if the ticking is coming from the engine, or from the belt and or pulleys it encounters? Only going up 3/4 of the way shouldn't have damaged anything, assuming your gauge is at least somewhat accurate.

fuel filters are easy on this model, right?

assuming this EGI, maybe throttle plate/bore cleaning. ..examine the idle air
          ....vacuum diagnosis

I will take that belt off tomorrow and see if it is still ticking. I am assuming if it still ticks it is a lifter or rod. If it goes away, does that mean bad alt., water pump, etc...? Like we both said though, if the gauge is accurate, 3/4 shouldn't have done damage, so I am at a loss.

I have never replaced one on it. I suppose I can start there as far as it idling low, but I don't want to put too much $ in it if it has something major wrong with it. I will just drive my other festy around until I can afford an engine swap (b8 preferred, maybe a bp ).

If it is easy to reach I would at least pull it and see if crud comes out the inlet.

dont know the price, but might be just 10 dollars

vacuum gauge might be 20 dollars.
