  • Ball Joint pinch bolts?

Any suggestions on reassembling pinch bolts with ball joints? For some reason the bolts are difficult to slide in and actually are stripping out before I can get them tight. Im thinking about taking it all apart, sliding the ball joint back out and using a large chisel to respread the jaws, in hopes of "squaring" everything up and then trying to reassemble. Just looking for anyone thats allready fought this battle. Thanks.

OH YES!! BATTLE!!! The ball joint is seated too far down. Raise it back out of the spindle some, and it will line up the way it should.

thanks, i will give it a try. when i look through the pinch bolt hole, the large metal pin coming up out of the ball joint is actually partly sticking into the pinch bolt hole, and that is what is stripping the bolt(trashing the bolt threads as we try to push it through)

Never had that problem if the hole is lined up.
Pick up on the yoke some off the control arm so to keep the weight off the bolt.

Use some penetrating lubricate like Blaster.

Don't use a air wrench on this to remove or you could strip the threads.

I have had a couple get in a bind and ended up taking off the first threads thinking it was close enough to line it up as it passed through the hole. The easiest way I found to line it up is to take a pry bar between the axle and balljoint stud, and just nudge it down enough that the bolt passes through as it should. If it gives you ANY interference, it isn't lined up.

You can also put a flashlight on the "far end" of the bore & see when the ball joint stud is more-or-less aligned with the bolt hole in the steering knuckle. You want to see the curved part of the stud, which is milled to accept the bolt, centered in the bore. If you see the "straight" part of the stud, it's either too high or too low w/r/t the bore.
