Only thing I can think is that when my son went to drop out of 5th it hung up a little (Not enough to engage it but enough to keep it from engaging other gears). Seems really strange and I wonder if anybody else has had this happen...
Yes, I've had that happen. The 5th gear is a little higher out of the oil so to speak.
Then when the oil level drops (bad seals, to much play in the diff carrier bearings etc)
That 5th gear can get abused pretty good, even though it's the least used gear.
Although you've gotten it back together at this point I'd say a chunk of tooth came off and got in the syncro, that's what I had happen. I was shocked to see a piece of my fifth gear missing because I so rarely ever use it.

      1. My WA 88LX with 185K makes grinding noises when shifting into 2nd above about 25mph (when trying to use engine braking descending a mountain).
      2. One of my AK 92Ls with unknown mileage (speedo cable was broken when I bought it) makes a smaller grinding noise when shifting into 5th as I reach freeway speed after acceleration.

      Are these "syncromesh" problems?
Yeah, that's a syncro problem. The purpose of the syncros "generally speaking" are to slow/stop the free wheeling effect of a gear just before it needs to be engaged.
Once the syncro gets too worn, it loses it's ability to do that. You might also be using
inferior atf fluid or worse gear oil. A change to some Mobile 1 synthetic atf or Redline synthetic atf might also help or be worth a try? It would be about a $35 experiment.

i know this is an old thread, but its the only one i could find with the problem im having. this same thing happened to me, but i was in 3rd coming down my street. 3rd felt very weird going into and out of just previously to not wanting to go into any gear. somehow it got into reverse and i was able to park my car. but currently it doesnt want to go into any gear. it feels as though there is no gate. looking around undernieth, nothing seems to be out of place/loose/broken. i can move the selector in and out and side to side to select gears when on the ground. at one point i did that and i had first again, but due to having something in front of the car i turned it off, moved the stuff, then when i went to turn it back on, it wouldnt and also was now in neutral and couldnt find a gear.

what did you do to 'fix' this? i recently put a new clutch and pressure plate and resurfaced flywheel in, fixed a leaking axle seal and topped the fluid back up. this was about a month or 2 ago? ive gone through 4 full tanks of gas since i did all that, and there was no lead up issues with any of this, it just stopped working. any help would be greatly appreciated as its currently stuck outside my house and insurance runs out in a couple weeks

^ unsure of others on here with BP's with "stock" trans. But I pulled into (autozone) to buy stuff for (cant remember)lol. and when I came out it wouldnt go into gear while car was running, having had similar
thing happen with a Fiero(miss that car!) I turned engine off, bypassed(cut and twist wires together under clutch pedal), Put it into gear, turened engine over and it jumoped( cause it was in gear), and timed my shifts without useing clutch all the way home, Next day I took trans out, and discovered my pilot bearing was SHOT/crumbled to pieces!?!?!? Went ahed and bought new clutcuh kit with cluth/pressure plate, pilot bear.... installed trans and worked fine! Not saying it is the problem you are having but, my case seemed the same, and it worked out for me.....

^^^ OH AND BTW!!!!! I have pix of what happend to my BP car if axle seals are not replaced and trans runs out of fluid!!!!!!! HAHA:nono:

the symptoms are the same whether the car is on or off. if its just while on its typically clutch area related. i installed a new pilot bushing while i did the clutch replacement. when i noticed the axle seal was leaking i stopped driving the car til i could go to my shop and replace it. i replaced all the fluid as well.

            All good knowledge though, thanks!
