  • Wheel howl

So I did the aspire brake swap and got new tires. I also replaced the passenger side half-shaft.
I'm getting tons of wheel/tire howl. I torqued the axle nuts properly and adjusted the toe-in to be about .25". I didn't replace any of the bearings but shaking the wheels they feel solid. When I go over 30-40 mph, the howl starts. It is definitely not a grinding noise. If I go perfectly straight it is not as loud. It definitely gets louder when turning. More so when turning left. Could this be just tire howl from lack of proper alignment or do you think it's the wheel bearings? I hoping to just align it once. Any input from past experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

wellll....heres hoping that you get it aligned and it goes away.....but I would not be surprised if it is the bearings. Howling sounds like a good description when they go bad.

i am going to go a head and say that it is your wheel bearing
does it get loud when u turn both ways
it should not make any noise when u turn one way and get louder if u turn the other way that can help tell u what side needs worked on
anyway thats my 2 cents good luck

It gets louder both ways. I think one way is louder than the other one but still loud both ways. Maybe the best thing is to do all the wheel bearings and go from there. Any good place to buy them with seals for all corners?

If the noise changes when turning more than likely a bearing or two

I experienced the same thing when i bought an L plus for my son and we replaced all the wheel bearings and it shut the howling right down. Although it was only the front left one i went ahead and did them all because the car had sit up for almost five years without bieng driven, and they werent very expensive at all.

You say the tires are new? As in brand new or used but pretty much new? The 13's I bought the other day howl but I know it's the tire.. you can look at them and see their feathered. Hoping with time they'll wear straight.

The tires are brand new. I paid more attention to where the sound is coming from and it seems to be from the driver's side rear wheel. The howl gets louder as the car turns either direction but much louder when turning right sharply. I'm going to start by replacing the rear wheel bearings (both wheels) and having an alignment done. If that doesn't help, then I'll replace the front wheel bearings too (and re-do the front end alignment). Thanks for all your input and ideas.

just my opinion, but I would go get a set of Timken (set 1 and set 4) bearings and change out the rears first. This may be all that is needed. Once you see how undersized they are, it makes sense.
Oh, and the front bearings are set11 in Timkin.

                    Just my $0.02 worth.
Front bearing make a grinding sound and rear bearing howl.
                    I second M715's suggestion.
Besides rear bearings are much easier to deal with.

Update: This morning I replaced the rear bearings with Timken's and the howl is gone! I'm really enjoying the aspire brakes. Thanks everyone for your input.
