  • Strange Wire on the Carb

Continuation of thread at http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...d.php?p=286289 about carb swap on a '88 manual

I was deep in, almost to the point of extraction, when i find a wire that i'm not 100% sure about, and want to ask befor ei really hose something.

Also, the 2 big plugs coming off the carb....what do i need to do with them to get rocking?

thats the wire for the choke thermostat
it'll do the 1/8 in 13.7, spin tires, and make all my drunk buddies giggle.

Does that wire hook up to your alternator?

Yes, that one goes to the distrib.
but the others I'm talking about are like, multiwire plugs over near the distrib. I'll get a picture in a few mins.

those go to the ABC valve and anti diesel solenoid (fuel cut off). don't mess with them (one will make the car run like crap and the other will shut it off, if unplugged).
              Trees aren't kind to me...

The plug for the choke goes to the distributor??? Your picture does not show that. The plug for the choke goes to the Alternator(red), the single plug goes to a resistor attached to the side of your distributor(light blue).
What carb swap? Stock carb to stock carb, or are you using a different carb now? The other two connectors, round and rectangular, go back as before so I am now a little confused..... I maybe take it for granted having more than one car to refer to usually with me.

No, the red wire goes to the alternator. I don't recall seeing one headed to the distributor. The rectangle and round are the ones I'm now unsure about. I am swapping to a Holley spec'd for a 82/83 Escort to get rid of all this malfunctioning vacuum crap. My Idle is unsteady, from 1200-2000 rpm, and unpredictable when/where, with the engine holding 3k at cranking when cool/cold till I hammer the throttle. That's what's being discussed in the thread I linked in the first message in this thread.

Since you will be bypassing the computer for fuel management, you would not be using either plug off the Festiva carb for that application it looks like save not knowing what the one plug on your Escort carb is for. That is what you will need to know. Is that a fuel cutoff solenoid on that carb? If it is, that would shut off the fuel from refilling the bowl. If it is some sort of idle step up solenoid to bump up the idle under a load like turning on air conditioning, or a heavy electrical load bogging down the idle, you may need to switch it to a vacuum type, or just run a slightly faster idle set with everything on.

BTW, sorry, but I missed the link to your earlier post.

So just leave those 2 (rect & round) entirely unplugged, and figure out what the round thing on the rear of the carb is, right?
Red wire back to the new electric choke.

I kinda like being in over my head, except for not knowing what the crap i'm doing.

One of these days, when it give me reason to, I will dive into my carb set up. As it sits right now, the two big plugs you referenced (one round, one square) are not hooked up at all. Connected to nothing. But as I say, it is working like a champ the way it is, so I'm not all that tempted to mess with it.
