  • 91 Festiva, Gears slipping? What needs fixed?

    Aloha!

I need to diagnose what to fix. I have a 5 speed manual transmission. When driving in any/all gears, there is a frequent slipping of what feels like a gear. It jolts the car very harshly until I take my foot off the gas, the RPM slows, and the slipping stops. The car wont pull forward when the slipping happens but the clutch doesn't seem to be 'popping out' of gear but slipping while in gear instead. Is this the clutch? Is this the transaxle? It seems the CV joints/boots are in tact so I don't know if it could be that.

I plan on pulling the car apart Saturday to further investigate but I would appreciate to hear from anyone with more experience and suggestions on what it might be.

    Thank you and happy holidays!

sounds like the clutch is toast or the cable is mis adjusted

I agree with BP-Festiva, if you leave it in gear and stomp the gas and it slips and when you let off you feel it grab...clutch is toast.

                  Clutch test:

Block wheels and set parking brake

put car in fourth and rev to 2,000 RPM

                  slowly release clutch

If motor doesnt stall within five seconds the clutch is slipping
