  • Hulkstiva is sick!!

So I got in my car this morning to go to work, tried cranking it and it was struggling. It started up on the second try but there was immediately an insane amount of smoke coming from under the hood! Popped the hood and noticed that a terrible squeal and all the smoke was coming from the timing belt/water pump area. I just changed both of those out in october. So I just wanted to ask if this is the normal occurrence for when a water pump fails? Or maybe something else has happened?

It's 30 degrees right now. I haven't had any problems with it until this morning either. I know I just need to get in there and take a look but it's gonna be hard since the car is at my apt. complex and working on cars isn't allowed in the parking lot there. If I can get it to my mom's house I'd be able to fix it, I just don't want to mess something up even worse trying to drive it over there.

You could remove the alt/ water pump belt and try turning stuff by hand to see whats locked up. Do you have A/C ?

            Maybe the alternator is siezed?

Mine was when I got the car and made clouds of smoke and sounded just like you're describing. If so, hit it with some penetrating oil.

Did that happen this morning too? Had any problems before this?

I'll definitely try that. Sucks I have to work all day today and tomorrow! I do have a/c but I removed the belt when I replaced the water pump since I never use it

If it runs, then it's not the timing belt. If you alternator was wet from driving and being warm when you parked it, then it could have frozen up. Belts sqeal, and smoke when a pulley isn't turning.

Sounds like this may be the problem. Thanks!

If all else fails I just might have to go with a bp myself. Seems easier to find those around here than the b8

Do you have A/C? When the A/C clutch froze on mine it smoked and squealed quite a bit! But that wouldn't explain why it didn't want to start.

                          lol.

So did it stop smoking/squealing? Have you tried it again?
