engine rebuild advice

ok, due to the fact that my oil leak has gotten a lot worse since the installation of my 5spd, and also I'm now burning quite a bit of oil as well ( i can drive an hour to work, let the car just sit there for 12 hours and lost a quart in the process)

I'm not very good at figuring out what i need to buy, so Ive just been eying rockauto..

how far will this kit get me to replacing all the seals in the entire engine? can any one tell me what exactly this kit comes with or what i need to buy with the kit, or would i be better off just buying everything separately? again also looking to fix the oil burning. i cant prove it but i think there is a good portion of the oil coming from between the engine and trans. but i know the bottom of the carb, back of the entire engine, all over the back /back top of the trans, alternator, etc has oil on it, some places its fresh some places its just thick greasy looking stuff.

could definitely use pointers in what i need to get and i sure would appreciate it thanks

I would replace the valve cover gasket first off. Burning oil could mean valve stem seals or piston rings (i think). If theres oil leaking between the trans and motor that is definatly your rear main seal. Could also be leaking from the front main seal, behind the crank pulley. If you're doing all these gaskets do the oilpan gasket aswell.

if you are losing oil in that kind of quantities, then likely you have both bad leak(s) and burning oil bad. also- read in the articles section about oil pan gasket by jglutz... thats helpful.
i ended up getting a full gasket set on ebay i think, came w/ pretty much everything but the oil pan gasket i think.. can't remember..

If your taking apart the engine I would replace as many gaskets as you can. Replace the timing belt, and water pump since your down there anyways. I would replace your half bearings, and piston rings. Do as much as you can that way you know it is going to be reliable.

ok so i "need" the following items:

Valve Cover Gasket
Valve Stem Seals
Piston Rings
Rear Main Seal
Front Main Seal
Oil Pan Gasket
Timing Belt
Water Pump
Half Bearings

am i missing any thing that i might as well do while i have this thing apart?

Replace EVERY gasket. When I rebuilt a B3 a few years ago, I got a deal on a complete engine gasket/seal kit, as well as rings and bearings, on eBay. Around $50 for all that, and it was good quality too. I spent about $50 more on a water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and exhaust donut.

$100 for a complete rebuild is absolutely doable if you shop around.

i've got a water pump timing belt and tensioner (guess the previous owner was going to replace all of that at once heh, never did though)

im planning on replacing every gasket, but i need help in figuring out what i need, this is my first rebuild, i dont know what i need to complete this thing so if im missing something from my list above let me know so i can make sure to get it

I haven't seen anyone mention oil pump yet. I always replace the oil pump when doing a rebuild. It's a bit expensive on the B3 but it's good insurance.

It depends on the motor and which one you get. A good Melling pump will be somewhere between $115 and $135. A standard Beck Arnley pump is around $60 for the B8
