  • Rear Spindle / Bearings Failed (Again)

Hey guys. Long story short, I had my rear wheel bearings go out on both sides. On the passenger side, the bearing is absolutely stuck on the spindle. I tried using a large puller on the drum and it would only break the drum instead of coming off.

After using PB Blaster and a torch I was still unsuccessful! I decided to remove the whole spindle/brake assembly via the 4 nuts on the back.

Does anyone know where I can get a used spindle/brake assembly?

P.S. Ive purchased new Timken bearings and seals. Also good grease and a grease gun / bearing packer. I'm doing it right this time

I would check with tony cash. If not, this would be a good time for an aspire swap.

Good question. Batstiva's failed going down the road at 55 mph and ripped the tire/wheel/half the spindle off because my friends at Midas put an air wrench to it and torqued it as tightly as they could.
Not fun at all getting passed by your rear wheel, trust me.

Packing the grease correctly, and starting out with good quality bearings are important, but overtightening the spindle nut will kill the bearings quickly.

Think my Hayne's says between 17-20 ft/lbs, while spinning the hub forward, then back off 1/4 turn. Don't have it in front of me right now. Somehow, all 3 ended up in the two festivas.

Yep, 18-22 Ft/lbs, then back off a 1/4 turn, then tighten it with your fingers until drag 3-7 in/lbs.

A small fish scale works great for me in place of a inch pound torque wrench.

Does a great job of telling what the drag is.

No problems ever with bearings I have installed..

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm pretty sure I tightened the spindle nuts too tight causing friction and eventually failure. Also the grease was kind of old an may have some grit in it. I got new Timkens, good grease, and a bearing packer now. Just need a new brake/spindle assembly. The funny thing is, I just had Tony Cash send me a spindle for the same side Hopefully hes got more...

I don't have a torque wrench so is 'hand tight' good enough? And whats the best way to secure that nut on the spindle? Just notch it with a punch? Or is there a special tool?

I got a spindle from tony cash that had a hole pre-drilled in it. I was surprised to see that. But it makes sense to do that. My wheel was soo close to coming off its scary!

UPDATE: I put the drum on a vice with a lot of heat and a big hammer. I was able to save everything but the drum. So once I get that, I should be good to go.

I also borrowed a in-pound torque wrench from a friend.

                          Wish me luck!

                              Wybnrml,

So you are sure that its 7 inch pounds? I converted 18 ft lbs to inch pounds and it says 216 inch pounds? I'm confused...
