  • Banging in engine compartment?

I was using a friends E-350 van to haul some stuff I had to get from Home Depot and on the way home I noticed a pretty bad banging noise coming from the engine compartment....I didn't notice it when I was driving cause it's kind of loud....a quick look at the temp gauge and it was going up pretty fast. Just before it topped out, the banging stopped and the temp gauge went back to where it normally is...I'm thinking a bad thermostat? I've just never heard such banging coming from and engine compartment, sounded like someone was going crazy in there with a gold club....is that the pressure trying to get out or something?

You need to feed the racoons under the hood they are hungry
Seriously though check the idler puller econolines are notorious for that - and while you got the belt off check for play in the water pump - that may be your banging
I can't tell you how many econoline box vans we used to get in that had temp issues - what was happening is the idler pulley was failing causing added strain on the water pump making the bearing go out in the pump.

Or if it has the thermal clutch fan make sure it hasn't started coming apart.
If a hammer doesn't fix it you have an electrical problem

x2 on the idler pulley, i have seen the bolts back completely out and it makes a heck of a racket. one car i saw lost 2 out of 4 bolts, before the belt popped off and i ended up fixing it.
