This is an interesting problem. You have spark at the plugs, or at least one of them, or at the plug wire of at least one of them. And fuel at the entrance to the fuel rail.

        Here are a few thoughts.
        1. Is it possible that the gas you saw coming out of the fuel hose was water or contaminated with water?
        2. Having fuel at the rail is not the same as having it in the cylinder.
        3. Having spark between one of the spark plug wires and the engine is not the same as having spark in the cylinder.
        4. If you have good fuel and spark delivered to the combustion chamber it might still not fire if the timing of the spark is off.
        5. Timing can be off at the timing belt or the distributor.

        Some recommendations.
        1. Check the spark at every plug by taking all plugs out, looking at them, and then grounding threads to the engine to see that they all fire. Hold with insulated pliers or lay them on the valve cover.
        2. Spray carburetor cleaner into the plenum or the plastic intake air duct, through one of the hose connections, replacing the hose before trying to start the car.
        3. If it doesn't fire then, it could still be the fault of bad gas.
        4. If the gas is good then you should check the timing.
        5. Mark the current position of the distributor. Then loosen it and turn it "very slowly" as you crank the engine to see if anything changes. If you find a location that allows it to start, good. If it backfires stop and go to the next recommendation.
        6. Check the relative positions of the cam and crank shafts according to the procedure for installing the timing belt.

I don't see how any of this could have been caused by the engine overheating. Unless it destroyed the engine and you are not getting any compression from any any of the cylinders. But if the timing is right you would expect to hear something when the fuel is ignited. A little poof maybe?

I'm subscribed, so please keep us posted. I really what to hear how this one ends.

I would like to know exactly how he established that there was good fuel in the combustion chamber. Do you know the answer to this question? If I were convinced this had been established correctly, then I would start checking timing.

good excuse to do an engine swap.
