  • Setting timing 92 auto

So my car is all ready to go with it's new engine just have to get it inspected. All that I have to do is set my timing. I know about grounding out the sti connector. My question is this, do I put the white mark on the crank pulley to the pointer sticking out of the timing cover or to the "t" on the set of timing marks? just have heard mixed things when I searched about the white mark, the t with the marks, and the pointer. Thanks all.

One real easy way, the woodruff key should be in the 12 o'clock position. On mine, this means the white mark on the notch lines up with the piece that sticks out of the timing belt cover, not the "T" .

Also, the camshaft sprocket has two lines that should be pointing at corresponding marks on the head at the twelve and three o'clock position....

The timing belt is done. I am trying to set ignition timing. But judging from what you said it would be the pointer.

OH! Shoot, uh, I can't remember what the setting is, but the degrees are marked by the "T"!

I picked up a '92 service manual for $1.00 at a used book sale. It must have been for this occasion.

                Roughly you should
                1. Ground the STI terminal.
                2. Check/set the idle speed.
                3. Set the timing.
                4. Since this the first setting you might want to check the idle speed again, to be sure it hasn't changed, before disconnecting the STI ground.

I have the ford service manual...it just says about aligning the white marks. The reason I'm havin doubts is that I don't have a white mark on my timing cover. But I'm going to assume my pointer used to be white from your quote. That was what I was assuming but just wanted to be totally sure. So I'll go with that. Thanks.

So it's the pointer then? Lack of sleep makes me somehow even more dense.

So I guess the marks are for when/if you manually mark tdc on the crank pulley then?

No, I don't think so. Those marks are used to set timing on carbureted Festivas. I don't know why they should be different. I wish someone would explain this to me.

On your crankshaft pulley you have two marks. One in yellow which marks TDC for #1 and #3 cylinders. One white one that marks 10* before TDC on those two cylinders, which is the recommended advance for these fuel injected engines.

Ok so bottom line is white mark on pulley to pointer. Thanks

You may not want to do this but this is what I did on mine. My covers were messed up so I just turned the disty clockwise till it pinged then backed it off. Although on mine it never pinged so it's turned as far as she'll go (I think). Doesn't have very much top-end but with the auto doesn't need it. Gets 30mpg average with my driving.
