  • 1989 ford festiva running very rich fuel mixture

I have a 1989 ford festiva, 4 spd ,carburated, almost 200k on engine, i just bought the car. it was cutting out until it would stop running ,"no spark when hot", i replaced the coil and distributor from wrecking yard, now it runs. but it runs so rich you can smell the exhaust when i stop at a stop sign, bad like burn your eyes bad" it ran rich before i replaced distributor," i can tell its gas not oil. the last owner replaced the cap, roter, wires and plugs to try and fix the distributor and coil problem. i replaced the plugs in case they were fowled didnt help.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

i adjusted the timing didnt help. i replaced the o2 censor , still running rich, i noticed something that seems weird , the check engine light doesnt come on , it lights up when i start the car so the bulb is good but no codes , wouldn't the check engine light register the bad fuel mixture , i am almost convinced there is no info getting to computer , no codes from the previous problem "distributor and coil missing and dying " , i removed the cat to see if it is plugged its not the problem, i am convinced the carb is controlled by the computer from all the censors and it isnt getting the right info, but if i knew i wouldn't be here typing i would be out driving my festy ,

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
after looking at everything possible i found a single wire going to the computer plugged it back in now i have codes

codes are 1= coil 9= coolant temp sensor and
    70=*****map censor or circuit*****

can someone help me with a pic or where there is and all the testing and info i can get
also the coil was from a wrecking yard as mentioned previously but i bet code 70 is my issue please help and thank you thank you

i know "get a chiltons" i will soon as i can find one

Better to go on Ebay and buy a Ford service manual. I have one for every car I own. They are much better than the aftermarket ones.

Discuss making performance enhancements to the OEM-spec engine in your Festiva or Aspire.

I suspect some of the "air bleeds" controlled by the ECU are not working.
So that your A/F ratio is always rich.
I do not know if the "air bleeds" are controlled by solenoids on the carb or else where on the intake side of the engine.
I second the Ford manual for this specific year.

thanks for the link, where is the MAS sensor on this model ???
could it be that allot of old leaky vacuum lines causing the ECU to think its using more air so ECU adds more fuel

Not to ask an obvious question, but have you checked the air filter? I'm sure you have, but just asking since it's not on your list of things checked.
The map sensor is on the firewall. If you are looking at the firewall from the front of the car with the hood up (obviously:tard it is just to the left of the wiper motor. Kind of rectangular box, bolted to the firewall, with 3 vac lines going into it. I have one laying around here somewhere that I bought on ebay a couple of years ago. My 89 doesn't have any of that emissions stuff, so if I can find it, it's yours.

It heats the gas. Very necessary. I'll see if I can find a pic of the map sensor for you. Or, someone else with a carby that actually still has a map sensor can chime in.

i am stuck those are the only codes left but i dont know which parts are the cause for these codes could someone help thats seen these codes before

when i am driving it stalls and cuts out or maybe should say bucks and spuders when holding a low steady rpm "only when under a load driving" could this be linked to the error codes i am getting

also just found they are forcing us to pass emission tests in this county starting this month, dont knw what i am going to do ,no way to pass a emission test running rich like this, now i am very desperate to fix issue

From this post, I would say that you have the nefarious vaccum leak from.... well.....
Time to check for a leak at the base of the carburator. I have had that before, and someone just posted on the FML line that they have a bucking bronco too. This would cause the computer to try and adjust for the lean condition and may be tripping your codes.
Another possiblity is if it only does it under 40 degrees usually as a storm front moves in and the barometric pressure drops. The Curmudgeon goes full rich after about one hour of driving under those conditions. In this case, the car is totally choked out, belching black smoke until it totally stallls out. Pull over, let it set for a minimum of five minutes, He runs again for another hour. I have been told to replace the temp sensor under the intake to cure that, but I never did so far, making him a Snow Bird.
Now you know where he got his name from....

well i went to the wrecking yard and got all the vacuum switches "sensors" , mas sensor and temp sensor " total cost $14.00,the car runs 100% better , except the new bucking problem, i will replace the gasket asp and report back i am also going to reset the codes and check them again,

m715 Time to check for a leak at the base of the carburator.

I hope you are right cause thats what i was thinking might be the problem , the bucking didnt start until i took carb off to inspect it, i noticed the gasket could be a little tattered

j idaho, I love this thread.
It's great to see someone make progress on getting their car straightened out and report back!
So many times, we(FF.com) try to help someone, but we never find out whether or not it helped and if they were back on the road.
