  • Speedometer not working

Ok, guys my speedometer quit working on me about a month ago. It started out fluttering a little , then it got worse and eventually stopped all together. I figured it was probably my cable since it did the same thing a couple of years ago and a broken cable was the culprit. Not this time. I took the cable loose at the tranny and spun the cable and the speedo needle moved. I know it was stuck in there all the way. Does this mean my speedo gear in the tranny is broken? If so is this part available? I would appreciate any info on this. If this is no longer available new I will post a (wtb) on this board. Thanks in advance.

How is the assembly which goes into the transmission? If I remember correctly the bottom gear is white nylon so it likely to go before any metal driving gear inside the transmission.

If the speedo gear on the cable is in good condition then i would suspect the gear in the transmission to be broken

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Word of caution. Be very careful when you take the gear housing off. If the shaft is broken and the gear is loose, it could fall down into tranny, so be very careful when you pull it out. If your lucky, have pair needlenose pliers ready or those surgical pliers type people use for removing hooks out of a fishes mouth. It happened to me once and the gear fell down and I figured it would have plenty of room on bottom of tranny but thats not case cause it got caught in gear shift links and put hole in bottom of tranny and I was able to rebuild the tranny with jb weld. It's still holding to this day and that was three years ago.

ok guys a slightly new twist to this story. Last night I was driving to the racetrack and out of the corner of my eye I noticed my speedometer was working. It worked for about 15 miles until I hit a rather large expansion joint on the highway and quit again. Today we pulled my gear out and the darn thing looks like new. I am totally baffled now. What can cause a speedometer to work when it feels like it and not when it doesn't?

speedo cable. my girlfriend's 323 would decide to show us the speed every other blue moon. her speedo cable was broken and would grab every now and then. luckily it was the shorter, disconnectable cable that bolts into the transmission with the gear on it. got another from a protege and it's as good as new.

when we had the cable out today we tried spinning it from the bottom and just like last time the needle moved. Tried turning it one way and nothing then turned it the other way and the needle moved again. Could it still be the cable?

had this happen to my festy, make sure the loose end of the cable is tightly in the sleeve, if the sleeve isnt hooked properly onto the part where it attaches to the speedo, the speedo wont spin properly. the mechanic who did my clutch job propbably pulled the speedo gear out by the cable, and then the sleeve was loose and not attached to the metal piece its supposed to, shoved it back on and speedo worked again. sorry for my poor terms hope you can understand what im trying to say..

well we double checked how the cable fits into the gear, checked the hold down. everything is tight . Dont know.

This is very similar to what's happening to mine. Did it get resolved? How so?

Have you tried pulling the end out of the tranny and hooking up a drill to it? Giving it a spin and looking/feeling around may help.

                            OH!!
Just remember, the old gear drive system that I no longer have in my jeep! The gear going into the tranny was NOT centered in the mounting bit. So if you rotate it, it would cause more or less interaction between the drive gear and the transmission. I do not know how the festy setup works, but make sure if it can be rotated, that it is in the proper position for proper gear tooth relations.

I am going to go look at mine right now!!

Yes, I did do that. I wanted to check see if it was operating correctly before I installed it.
