  • Oil Pan Leak / CV Leak Seal replacement etc

okay so yesterday I spent a lot of time trying to make sure I did a decent job on the oil pan gasket. I think it went pretty well.

    that thread is here: http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...light=oil+leak

here are some pics of the oil pan gasket today after about 12-15 miles of driving. not very much but a lot of stop and go, etc.

and it's dripping from that little finger of copper just enough to leave this spot and this is it, I guess...and I friggin parked in the one. lol.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

my next inquiry is about the CV axle seals that everyone has issues with. I need to pull the speedo cable, check the level, add atf, etc. But I want a more permanent fix obviously compared to just filling up the tranny.

these seem to be good threads: http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...ght=axle+seals

Post your Festiva or Aspire repair and maintenance issues. - USE THIS FORUM FOR ANY TECHNICAL RELATED POST (IE. How do I change my oil?, How to remove axle from tranny?, etc)

so my questions I guess, is there anything else I can do about the oil pan?

and I'll need to get seals, a seal puller, use a 32 or bigger socket (I have some around that size with the impact set I got) to get the new seals in. Just follow MechDJ's tips in the one thread.

I'm showing part #99139 Redi-Sleeve's at advanced Right & Left 31.48 each. wow. As far as replacing these and still resulting with a leak...anything I can look at to tell if it'll wear it out again?

I just went to the local auto parts store and grabbed new tranny/cv axle seals. Pulled the shafts...used a screw driver to pop out the old and then just tapped them back in with a hammer until flush. No leaks not nothing. All I have ever done when replacing them in various Festy's.

Oil pan gasket always seems to be a 2 time job....the last time I did it my engine was out. Never used so much RTV though....I think it hinders in some cases.

that makes me feel a lot better coming from one of our top members for the cv seals.

as far as the rtv goes on the pan the manual wasn't so clear with it's arrows and lines?? I agree, especially with Jim's point of being dry minus the two spots. but at the same time I tightened all the bolts meticulously, I'll snap some shots of the gasket as it's pushed out in some spots pretty far from how tight I have everything. and the excess rtv there is from when I put it on the pan to hold the gasket in place. I am at least happy that it isn't leaking a siv like it was.

For your oil pan leak, you might try one of those gas tank repair kits with the 2 separate packs of liquid that you mix together. Clean the oil off good where it leaks and put some of that stuff on. A long time ago, a guy that worked at Advance Auto said they had some kind of sealer that you apply to a leak like your oil pan has. I never got any of it and I don't know if they still have it, but you could ask them about it.
        You gonna race that thing?

ummm...something like a permanent epoxy or something like this: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...32_T%7CGRP2132____

probably not the best idea imo, but I'm certainly not opposed to ideas.

I need to be able to drop the exhaust and I think I'll have a much easier time with the pan and gasket alignment. the gasket just doesn't want to stay put at 45 degrees up and over the exhaust and under the crank, etc. lol!

I'll do some better looking tomorrow, I guess what really matters is that isn't the bearing in the pulley/crank, right?

I had to replace the cv seal on my blue festiva, popped the axle out, grabbed the hammer, used the claw and pryed out the old seal and pushed the new one into place, slightly tapped on it until it was all flesh with the tranny, put everything back together and it was perfectly fine!

ejp2fast, make sure you have all of the old seal out maybe? and make sure the new one isn't to crooked when you put it in.

tried everything... first time thought the seal was too FAR in and the axle OD seal wasn't sealing... then, tried to clean the trans ID where the seal goes, and made that real smooth... still leaks...
i have ordered lower control arms and are ready to drop in when the next seal change comes... i just can't seem to whack it..

EJP, do you think it's the LCA? or the ball joint allowing it to pull the CV out just enough to leak like eurotiva had going on?

or is it something for the "sleeve" that CharlieZ was talking about?

                      Needs LCA's anyway...
question: how much of a gap should be between the transmission itself (face of the seal) to the large inner CV piece?
If i recall, mine has always been between 1/8 and 3/16 of an inch... and also- my axle shafts are locking into the transmission like they should be...??

that would be great information to know, especially if it has an impact on how well the seals work, how efficiently, etc.

I have LCA's and ball joints with my aspire knuckles, guessing they're a direct swap? I think I have everything I need now, except I may replace the rotors just cuz

                          bump for anyone else's input??

I need to hop down there again and look at it after work today and see if it's my oil pan or something else for the drip...

the right and left side CV seals on the transmission, are different part numbers (and are physically different)...

Verify that you did not get goofed by the parts store. This happened to me, at NAPA. Once I figured it out, and bought the correct seals, my problems went away.

                            Hope this helps!

the seal is the same for both sides. I have never had any different ones in the 6 Festy's I have owned.
