Leaking exhaust-manifold-to-exhaust-pipe gasket

    I determined that the heat shield fasteners are M6-1.0 (not M4-1.0), and picked up the proper metric tap.

      Yours looks a lot like most of mine. No, the outer heat shield pipe is not sealed, and could have moisture or something else trapped in between the pipes, ?????causing the smoke you described???? Just a possiblity.
      Oh, the original exhaust pipe from front to back had a heat shield similar to that full length on it also.

      Let us know what you find.

        Is it possible some oil from a leaking valve cover gasket got on the manifold and smoked.

        My two 88s leak (133k & 192k miles) and are about to have new gaskets.

        I believe the two layer down pipe is to shield the heat from the afterburner effect of the air injection at the top of the down pipe. Likewise the double OEM pipe from the catalytic converter. (Usually gone after the first visit to a muffler shop.)

          I got it all reassembled with both of the new paper gaskets on Sunday, and have driven it about 50 miles since then with no exhaust odor. I left the heat shield off for now so I can watch for leaks.

          Paul39, there WAS a thick layer of caked oil on the front (spark plug side) of the engine, all the way down to the oil pan, but none on the manifold. I've had the car several years just parked in my "spare cars to check out" area, with only 101K on it. It appears that at some time in the past, there must have been a serious oil leak. I cleaned a lot of it off BEFORE reattaching the exhaust manifold, and will take it somewhere sometime to have the whole engine compartment steamcleaned. So, it could have been oil on some hot parts masquerading as an exhaust lead, though I did smell what surely was exhaust odor.

          So, unless the odor reappears, I can scratch this off my "worry list" and sleep at night knowing that I once again have a "hot spare" Festiva to get around in WA. Like I tell people who ask why I have so many identical cheap cars, "So if I wrap one around a tree, I can walk home and get another one!"
