  • B6 crank nose key

To begin with, my Festiva shop manual doesn't show what I saw, and my Chilton's 323/etc. manual didn't go into detail...

When I put together my crank cogs and then the pulley, I put the key in with the bevel in first with it down to fit into the slope of the keyway on the crank nose.

It didn't go in all the way. Maybe 3/8" of it stuck out. That seemed to be fine since the pulley went on over it and I put on the crank bolt and torqued it with no problem.

Does this sound normal? Or did I maybe put the key in the wrong way? Neither manual mentions this that I saw.

Asking this a slightly different way: if one were to install only the timing belt cogs and the crank bolt over the key, would it all be flush? Mine stuck out with the bolt bearing on the tip of the key. This just seemed weird to me.

    Thanks,

    Karl

    Looks like you did okay

EDIT: If the bolt is resting solely on the tip of the key, that sounds like a problem. The key should sit more flush with the assembly, and the bolt will tighten down on the backplate/cog assembly

Yay! Thank you! I did it right. Nice cross section diagram!

Appreciate the quick response. Now I can sleep well and hope to get my engine/MTX in tomorrow while the weather is "almost nice."

if things are preped and go smoothly, you should have the engine in and ready to fire in under 3 hours (ready to fire being: all that's left is to burp the coolent system)
              Trees aren't kind to me...

              currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

It's just after 12:30 and I'm about finished with the engine, which is off the stand on hanging on the crane. Dad's gone out for food and after we eat we should be mating it to the MTX.

Just matching things, being careful (no more leaving seals in oil pans!) and chasing down little parts, etc. takes time! I should have pics up tonight of whatever gets done today. There's a possibility it won't be all that much.

Now's time for me to read up on the MTX assembly.
