When you said "crank", did you "crank" with the key, or by hand?

I hope it's not a broken connecting rod. I would pull the engine and drop the oil pan.
On second thought. Phone around for a B6 engine out of a Mazda 323 and drop that back in instead. Don't bother fixing or troubleshooting the B3.

I did it by hand for a bit and found no resistance, then by key

well the spark plugs were out, it turned over just fine

Man, that sounds crazy! It could be a piston piece or rod.
I would almost be afraid to crank it and start it.

Honestly, if I'm faced with a swap anyway, we'll see what this thing does.

I put the sparkys back in and started it up. Still runs funky but not nearly as bad as it did before. I had to keep giving it gas to stay alive, probably because I don't have the intake put together tight. It's running rich.

But I moved it about 20 feet under it's own power, haha. 322028452 times more peppy than my girlfriend's auto 323.

I'll have a vid of it running in a sec. I couldn't get a shot under the hood while it was running, but driver's seat should be good enough for now.

Alright, I'm pretty sure the headgasket is blown on this B3. There's huge billowing clouds of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe when accelerating.
