  • Rear bearing help quick please!

    Ok so I got that festiva. Replacing the rear wheel bearings... How does it come off? There is like a ridge in the axle shaft that it cant seem to get over... What am I overlooking? Car is in much better shape than expected btw

    Most likely the hub is just sticking to the brakes. Takes a little pounding and prying sometimes to get them off... huh sounds like my first girlfriend...

      Do i have to take the shaft that the bearings are on off? Cause it doesn't look like they could go backwards either cause the shaft is even bigger behind it. Sorry I guess I just don't understand what you meant

        No once you remove the nut the hub and wheel bearings will slide right off. Sometimes it just hangs on the brakes.

          Hmm so the bolt is the same diameter the whole way and everything else slides off?

            The rear portion of the spindle is a little bigger as that's where the majority of the weight would ride. It'll slide off it's not frozen.

              It'll slide out? How would it get past the shattered outer bearing inner ring that won't come off? Sorry for the questions, first time for everything

                Haynes manual hints:
                - disengage parking brake
                - pull hub/drum assembly out slightly, then push it back to force outer bearing off spindle enough so it can be removed
                - pull drum assembly off spindle
                - use screwdriver or seal puller to pry seal out of rear of rotor
                - remove inner wheel bearing

                  Let me rephrase what is going on here.

                  I took the wheel off, then the grease cap off, then the drum cap. When I took the drum cap off, the chunks of the outer bearing fell out in a greasy chunky mess but the center ring of the outer bearing remains. Its not stuck as it will spin and slide, but there is a ridge on the spindle preventing it from coming off. So I guess the question is

                  How does one remove a outer bearing, shattered or not?

                          Very good possibility that the bearing welded itself to the spindle. It happened to me. Never did get it off, so I replaced the spindle.

                          This may be a good time to think about an Aspire suspension swap.

                            Ok we FINALLY got it off with some serious hammering. Now we're just having issues with the drum not going back on far enough...

                              "Drum not going back on far enough?"

                              You mean you already replaced and greasepacked the bearings and you can't get the drum on properly?

                              If so, keep turning it and working it. Guess that's the best advice I have now.

                              Make sure you have the right bearings for the job, too. A1 and A4 for some brand parts numbers.

                              This probably won't help at this point, but here is a pic of a healthy Aspire spindle assembly for you:



                              I was about to remove the old parts for cleaning and inspection. The left side shoe is unclipped. Your Festiva spindle will have some slight differences but is essentially the same stuff.
