    I agree, its an electrical problem, the CEL came on because you momentarily lost the dist reference pulse, and who knows what else. I think you will find a main harness connector loose somewhere, and since it does it most with a pass then look cloesly on that side.

      try starting the car in neutral, handbrake on. pop the hood and try wiggling the connector on the distributor to see whether the car dies when you do, i had a problem like the one you mentioned that i tracked to that connector having a loose and possible dirty connection..
