Working on a 1993 EFI festy.
Just bought it, drove it home, am fixing some oil leaks, have done the valve cover gasket and am waiting for the oil pan gasket to arrive. Have just replaced the timing belt.
I have powerwashed the engine.
I completed the timing belt and valve cover gasket yesterday, and upon trying to start up, the engine would not run......grrr. Turns out it was the air flow sensor that sits atop the air cleaner box was faulty. I got another used one from the wrecker, installed it, and then it ran. Perhaps it got water inside?? Dunno.......it ran before I started powerwashing and preplacing the timing belt........
Anyway, onto the next task.
It has a rough, lopey idle. I sure noticed this when setting the timing with the timing light. The timing marks were jumping back an forth under the strobe light beam. The engine accelerates well, holds a steady rpm, say approx 2000 rpm and above without fault, but when it decelerates back to idle, the rpm`s drop too low, stumble, then it returns to the rough, lopey idle.
I noticed this same problem when I bought the car and drove it for the short ride home.
Has new NGK platnum plugs.....but it does it with the old motorcraft plugs too.......I checked.
I have the haynes manual. I`m thinking the EGR valve is plugged or non-working diaphram?
What else is a likely cause?
I can hear a *hissing* sound, at idle, seemingly from the area around the back, top of the engine area. A quick look last night did not reveal an obvious vacuum leak.......I`ll look further today. Perhaps the hiss is just the normal sound the intake and injectors make with normal operation??
Thanks for your thoughts.
