  • Rough, lopey idle......EGR?

Working on a 1993 EFI festy.
Just bought it, drove it home, am fixing some oil leaks, have done the valve cover gasket and am waiting for the oil pan gasket to arrive. Have just replaced the timing belt.

    I have powerwashed the engine.

I completed the timing belt and valve cover gasket yesterday, and upon trying to start up, the engine would not run......grrr. Turns out it was the air flow sensor that sits atop the air cleaner box was faulty. I got another used one from the wrecker, installed it, and then it ran. Perhaps it got water inside?? Dunno.......it ran before I started powerwashing and preplacing the timing belt........

    Anyway, onto the next task.
It has a rough, lopey idle. I sure noticed this when setting the timing with the timing light. The timing marks were jumping back an forth under the strobe light beam. The engine accelerates well, holds a steady rpm, say approx 2000 rpm and above without fault, but when it decelerates back to idle, the rpm`s drop too low, stumble, then it returns to the rough, lopey idle.
I noticed this same problem when I bought the car and drove it for the short ride home.

Has new NGK platnum plugs.....but it does it with the old motorcraft plugs too.......I checked.

I have the haynes manual. I`m thinking the EGR valve is plugged or non-working diaphram?

What else is a likely cause?

I can hear a *hissing* sound, at idle, seemingly from the area around the back, top of the engine area. A quick look last night did not reveal an obvious vacuum leak.......I`ll look further today. Perhaps the hiss is just the normal sound the intake and injectors make with normal operation??

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Find the vacuum leak, then see where you're at.

Assuming you've checked this, but I'm going to ask anyway. Did you bag/remove the battery, and did you bag the dizzy before you started powerwashing?

Moisture under the cap, depending on how bad it is, will cause idle/stall problems. Also while you're in there, make sure there's no oil under the cap, which would mean (more than likely) that the inside o-ring in the dizzy is going bad. Oil under there will also cause idle issues. Just asking...

No. I didn`t bag the dist before powerwashing. I did take the cap off, and clean with a rag and rubbing alcohol. There was no water or oil under the cap, but I cleaned it anyway, to be sure.

Pretty sure I found the air leak that was causing the rough idle.....
Earlier, when I had changed the valve cover gasket, I needed to partially remove the EFI from the intake manifold, in order to get the wriggle-room to remove the valve cover. In doing so, the gasket between the EFI and the manifold got damaged. That`s where it was leaking from.

So.......considering that that little gasket is likely a dealer-only gasket, meaning a week away, I just sealed it up with Three Bond 1149 gasket sealer. It`s great stuff, and it`s my go-to first choice gasket sealing product.

So I`m still looking for the EGR valve on this 93
Does it even have one?? Not sure what I`m looking at when it comes to emmission related stuff.

Lots on vids on youtube of guys cleaning the EGR valve on their ride, and nothing under the hood resembles any of the EGR valves I`ve watched in the vids.

If it has one, it`s likely never been cleaned, and is likely past due........

I don't believe the fuel injected Festivas have an EGR valve.

I was told here the EFI engines do not have EGR valve. My carbed '89 has one.
