Ya the engine must be @ TDC on the compression stroke with the rotor pointing @ number 1 and it should fire no problem unless its flooding out or not getting fuel. You should know what the carb is doing by pulling the number 1 plug to see if its soaked or dry. I had this problem on the LX we have but it has a stock carb and ended up being a vacuum problem.89L build thread http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=36422

Sticking valve, or something causing compression back through the intake during the ignition cycle.
This pretty much screams valve timing or VERY bad ignition timing. Like 90° out ignition timing, so you're getting ignition during the intake cycle.
Done comp check?

Its not backfiring anymore through the intake. If he has fuel and spark then its got to be a ignition timing problem or the carb isnt adjusted right?
A compression test would be a good idea though.89L build thread http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=36422

you do know that there are 2 marks to look at and line up on the cam gear right? I know of people using the mark that points to the right as the mark that should be pointing straight up. (hell....I have done that myself) Arty just fixed mine at Ohiostiva...It was off by 2 teeth. PO to the PO had it set wrong and just turned the disty all the way counter clockwise. The bolt should be just about centered in the swing slot for the disty to make it run right.
Also after you figured out that the rotor was wrong and turned it....did you change it to the right position after changing the wire positions for the second time? It can go on 3 different ways."FLTG4LIFE" @FINALLEVEL , "PBH"

Just about got her straighten out. I double checked TDC, found out that I was wrong again. So she starts, and I can get teh timing light to the 10 degree mark. However, as soon as she hits that mark a minute later she dies. When I step on the throttle she dies as well. Like she is bogging down. The choke is wide open, I am sure that plays a factor. Then just to make things worse my head gasket is about gone. Everytime she fires up there is a nice puddle under the fuel pump of OIL. Yes, I wiped my finger across the ledge and smelt it and rubbed it inbetween my fingers.Man should eat when he can for Man does not know when his last meal will be.

No I dident taste it. Its to hot outside, so if it was fuel I probably would have exploded. While analyzing the leak, there is a puddle under the car and the oil reads only half way between full and empty on the dipstick.Man should eat when he can for Man does not know when his last meal will be.
