sorry guys i have not had a chance to touch my festiva lately, i just got a new job and i have been spending alot of time working on cars there.

last night my uncle came over he is a ford master tech and car guru, this guy really knows his stuff, we tested my whole fuel system, everything checked out ok there, we took my cat off and found that was pretty plugged up, i replaced my o2 sensor and put my stock b6t vaf back on...

same symptoms running very bad, poor idle and missing.

there is a capri xr2 for sale by me with a blown head gasket he wants $500 for the whole car think i might get it and start swapping parts.

      What do you guys think?

Have you checked for a boost leak? Also venting to the atmosphere will cause a rich condition because the ECU is spraying fuel to mix with air that isnt there. I havent had much experience with the 1.6's but I have had alot of experience with turbo cars, DSM mostly. Not sure if the same principals apply but I would do a BLT and see if it helps.

        Are you running a AFPR?

no adjustable fuel pressure regulator, do you think installing one would help at all? my next plan of attack was to do a compression test, and now ill do a boost leak test too.

          Thanks for the advice

Do a BLT and go from there. I would doubt a AFPR would do anything for you. Are you able to tune the ECU or anything? Upping the boost alittle should lean you out according to the wideband, if so try that and see if it helps. Kinda odd that this all of a sudden happens after a car show.

i was thinking the same thing on the afpr, i have a reich racing ecu, which is a esentially a remapped stock ecu no real tuning capabilities, i was thinking about investing in some kind of apexi fuel management or something like that do you think that would help me out?

I had your symptoms and it had to do with my tps. Check it with a multi meter.

Also try adjusting the screw on the vaf. Just make sure you know how many times you are turning it so you can set it back if it doesn't help. Also when you do the boost leak test you'll be able to tell if you have vaccum leaks too.

I wish i had the experience with the B6T engine but I cant really say. To me a apexi SAFC II would probably help but not sure if it would do anything with a pre-mapped ECU.

The only logical thing I can figure, unless something is bad would be to try and lean out your mixture by adjusting the ignition timing, or upping the boost. If your running rich upping the boost wont hurt as long as your not hard on the pedal. Im not really sure what else to say...

Whatever you do do not let the engine go into a really lean state otherwise detonation will happen.

right now its not even a matter of running rich its a matter of running at all, its rich one minute, then lean, it misses, the idle goes up and down. something must have gone bad i just cant find what it is yet.

Thanks for your advice ill let you know when i play with it some more, i just get so mad when i dump money into this car and nothing changes

Yes, there is a brass screw on your vaf just like on the throttle body. It's like a controlled vacuum leak. The gear thing is pretty important, that directly controls how much fuel goes in and when. Make sure to put it back where it started if it didn't make any changes.

I get really mad too.But check your tps before you spend money on things that might not solve the problem. I have just started to learn this.

Im gonna throw my cards on the table and say that maybe there is something wrong with the ECU possibly. If you have swapped out diffrent VAFs and the same thing happens then ECU maybe. Do you have a stock B6T ECU?

me and my uncle are thinking the same thing as you bad ecu, i don't have a stock b6t ecu thats why i was thinking about buying another parts car, i know a guy with 2 gtx's and a 323 gt ill give him a call and see if he has any spare parts i could use.

Grey vw, Thanks for the info i guess ill play around with my vaf tomorrow after work and check my tps. if it doesnt go so well it could ruin my day again haha

Getting mad is all part of the learning experience man. Im building a festiva from the ground up and doing a 89 to 93 FI swap and doing the auto to manual swap all at the same time. I get pretty heated but I just take a deep breath and continue forward. I hope you get this figured out. Good luck!
