  • Belt Issue?

So not long after I got the car it started to get bad belt slip noise under acceleration. While repairing some other things I replaced the Alternator belt which I believe was the source of my noise.. All was good, then a few hundred kms of driving later, it starts slipping & squeeling again. I put up with it for a bit, but seemed to come & go so I didn't stress.

Now on my drive home this morning I could smell rubber pretty bad, assumed it was slipping & burning. Half way home the Charge Battery light came on the dash, and when I got home I noticed the car was running near hot.

I popped the hood & found the alternator belt gone completely.

What happened & how do I fix this?

It sounds like maybe the alternator bearings went bad. Alternator might be locked up. Try to spin it and the water pump pulley, it could be bad too.

Hrmmm They seem to spin okay by hand.

My next concern is, can i drive this thing to get parts without doing damage? I assume it's going to overheat pretty fast even If it does run.

        ^^ NO!!! Don't do it!!

It does not take a whole lot of effort to warp the heads on these things. If you think it's going to overheat getting to the parts store, don't chance it.

Back to the original problem, the belt. I'm assuming here that you properly tensioned the belt, so I'm going to skip that. Now my question- You got any oil leaks? Slick used to go through alt. belts at the rate of about one every three months. The last time I had to change the belt (on the side of the road, air temperature was about 100 degrees, oh joy!) I made a special effort to make sure the pulleys were free of oil/grease. After that day, I never had to replace the belt again, and that's been over a year ago.

Sounds to me like oil on the belt/pulleys like Bat said. Could also be an overly tensioned belt that loosened as it wore (unevenly) and finally got stuck in one spot till it was worn through and disappeared.
          No festiva for me ATM...

Thanks for the feedback guys. There are a few Oil Leaks, hopefully nothing that is making it on to the belts, but I will take a good look at that!

Also - my girlfriends brother who is an aspiring mechanic (but currently just works on his beater truck) sprayed something on my belts yesterday because he heard it squeel - My guess is he was lubricating it which obviously does not solve the problem & may have indeed lead to it breaking.

In addition to all that - I had a co-worker install it last time & I can't be certain he tensioned it properly!

I have moved the alternator & am about to go pick up a new belt... when I install it again, how can I get the tensioning right with limited tools available?

He probably sprayed some belt dressing on it. Makes the belt sticky

                    We get along alright haha...

I just think him (along with many other people) think that lubing up your belts are a way to get rid of noise.. which I guess in some way it does, but it by no means fixes it - in fact makes it worse.

Anyways, I got a new belt today, wire brushed the pulleys to remove any slick surfaces left by the burnt rubber & installed and tightened it as directed by the manual & a few other readings online.. lets see how long it lasts this time around.
