  • scratches in front seal journal

During my last timing belt replacement at 274K also replaced front crank seal that was leaking. Used punch to make hole for self-tapping screw. Seal came out okay but noticed that screw had "walked" toward crank leaving corkscrew-shaped scratch in journal. Sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper and reassembled. Was okay for a week or so then started leaking profusely. Have engine out. Any way to patch it up to milk the last few 20-50K miles out of it?

You roughed up the crank and that ate away at the seal. You're going to have to really go fine grit and polish it.

You should have filled in the scratch with a little JB weld. Then gently polished it smooth with 600 emery cloth. 220 is way to much grit. Without seeing it I would have to say you may be in need of a crank.

Seems to me somebody makes a thin sleeve that can be glued over a scratched and/or pitted journal. Or am I just imagining that?

Damn that stinks, ive never heard of someone making a thin sleeve, only thing I've heard is what everyone else is saying. Really fine emery Cloth and make sure that baby is smooth, seals are such a pain in the rear, 1 little tiny nick and it'll find a way to push threw it!

Im not sure if they make them for this engine or not but they are called speedy sleeves and i have installed several of them ... very easy quick fix for this issue ...Its just a very thin shim that gets tapped over the crank end and the seal is made to fit the sleeve .. they come in kits sleeve and seal
New build on the way .

yes, they are available for the B3 snout. Napa or Northern Auto should have them.

I ended up filing the high spot a little then polished it with 1500 grit paper. Today I got a piece of 3000 grit paper and the journal now looks like chrome. If it still leaks I'll try a snout sleave. Won't know for a while cause it's a back-burner project since I have my '89 to drive.
