During my last timing belt replacement at 274K also replaced front crank seal that was leaking. Used punch to make hole for self-tapping screw. Seal came out okay but noticed that screw had "walked" toward crank leaving corkscrew-shaped scratch in journal. Sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper and reassembled. Was okay for a week or so then started leaking profusely. Have engine out. Any way to patch it up to milk the last few 20-50K miles out of it?

You should have filled in the scratch with a little JB weld. Then gently polished it smooth with 600 emery cloth. 220 is way to much grit. Without seeing it I would have to say you may be in need of a crank. Some people like to read fiction,I prefer to read repair manuals. Weird I know-

I ended up filing the high spot a little then polished it with 1500 grit paper. Today I got a piece of 3000 grit paper and the journal now looks like chrome. If it still leaks I'll try a snout sleave. Won't know for a while cause it's a back-burner project since I have my '89 to drive.
