  • Water Pump or Alt Pulley?

I am now on my third belt within 500kms of driving.. First one I replaced because it was squeeling a lot when I bought the car.

Second one started to squeel and then a friend sprayed WD-40 on it so it burned out & snapped.

I am third belt in & I can hear it starting to squeel again.

If the bearings in the water pump or alternator are going will it cause this? If so, how do i determine which one it is?

Is there anything else it may be?

    thank you all!

Oh also - there doesn't seem to be any leaks on to the belt..

Take the belt off and spin each component by hand and listen.

The alternator pulley will cause this periodic stress on the belt if
Its going bad It locks up every once and a while until it locks up for good.

Or after you put a new belt on you should re tighten it after 100miles of driving

No it's about the half inch of movement that i've read is good. I had a mechanical friend check it out, he also said its a good tension.

I have a new waterpump sitting at home, just dont want to install it if not necessary :p

I had the same problem on my 90. The squeal disappeared after I changed the alternator. It was the only thing I hadn't changed. I'd try it first. You could spin it with the belt off and it sounded and felt fine. No strange noise, vibration at all.
