It would be easier with the pulley off and the Aspire has the big nose crank so the bottom pulley has to come off anyhow. The belt won't slip between the bottom pulley and the oil pan flange.

Need tutorial on how to get outer joint apart. My FSM says it doesn't happen. According to it you must install a new outer boot from the other side after completely removing inner joint.

I think at one point I tried to fish the belt through and couldnt get it because of the pulley. Not to sure but you can try.

EDIT- just noticed you said you have the A/C pulley.... Might have to take the side engine mount bolt out and drop the engine down in order to get a socket on the bolt.
I doubt that just putting it into 1st will be enough to keep the motor from spinning. But I do think I can get my breaker bar and a socket on it. Good point about the engine mount, if needed.

I could always try removing the starter and sticking my prybar in the flywheel teeth. That's how I broke crank bolts loose on Subarus.

Edit: putting it into gear probably will work--my front wheels are in the air, and I was thinking that way. Plus one axle is out! So I have to put the axle in, drop the wheels onto the ground, and then go for it.

It would be nice of course, but I don't think I do enough wrenching to justify it.

The Book of the Tribulations of Tominmo

                Chapter I

1 And it came to pass that Tominmo did decide to change out his Aspire driver side CV axle.
2 But the Lord said, Tominmo, for thy unbelief in Me thou art a schmuck, and thee pisseth me off mightily. For this cause will I smite thee.
3 And so the Lord did fubar Tominmo's CV axle circlip, and the passenger side one too, for good measure.
4 For three days did Tominmo struggle mightily with his CV axle, using many choice words in the process. But the axle would in no wise depart from the transmission, for the Lord had fubared the circlip.
5 On the fourth day the Lord, seeing how Tominmo stuggled mightily but in vain, and suffered in anguish, did relent and decide to give him aid. But when the Lord fubars something, even He cannot unfubar it.
6 So He went to His chief auto mechanic (for there are many Ferraris and Porsches and suchlike in Heaven) and said, How can we assist Tominmo, for though he is a schmuck I would have mercy on him.
7 And the chief mechanic said, Lord, I will go down and assist him with his tribulations.
8 On the next day did a stranger appear to Tominmo, and discussing his problem with him, suggested he just put a new boot on the axle and be done with it. And Tominmo did not know this was an Angel of the Lord, for his aspect was as that of a nerd.
9 So Tominmo took the angel's advice and was able to get his Aspire on the road again. And when he had closed the hood, the Angel of the Lord revealed himself to Tominmo, saying, Lo, I am an Angel of the Lord, and His chief mechanic, sent here by the Lord God to assist you. And having said that, he vanished most dramatically.
10 And Tominmo was struck with awe at these events, and cried out in a loud voice, saying, Holy bat guano, Neanderpaul is right!
11 And then Tominmo went in search of a suitable sacrifice to make to the Lord. But as there were no coffee shops within one hour's march from his home, he was unable to find any members of the Birkenstock tribe to sacrifice.
12 For the Lord hath no use for the Birkenstockians, who do not regrad the majesty of the Lord, and waste time with the hugging of trees, and the saving of whales and the spotted owl. Plus they drove Smart cars.
13 And the Lord had given instructions that anyone who liked Smart cars could in no wise enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but must instead go to the Other Place, where there were only Ladas.
14 But just then his neighbor El-mer, of the Fuhd clan, arrived from a day of hunting; for the Fuhds were mighty and renowned hunters. And El-mer gave unto Tominmo a hare which he had just killed, so that he could make a sacrifice.
15 And Tominmo made a sacrifice to the Lord, but being as it was only a hare, he vowed to drive to the coffee shop on the next day. And so he made a club from and old CV axle, and the next day he did visit a nearby coffee shop, and gave the Birkenstockians what for.
16 And the days of Tominmo were long and prosperous, for no longer did the Lord smite him. Much.

                    Chapter II

1 Now there came into the land a man named Zanzer, who was both cruel and mysterious.
2 For he was amused at the misfortune of others; and he was a man who liked to zanz. But no one knew what it meant to zanz, and he would tell no man; and for this reason an air of mystery surrounded him.
3 The Archangel Michael was at the right hand of the Lord. He was, as it were, the chief executive officer of the Lord, seeing to it that the Lord's wishes were carried out.
4 So anywayeth the Archangel Michael came to the Lord, and saith unto Him, Lord, if you thought Tominmo was a schmuck, wait'll you get a load....
5 But the Lord regarded him not, for he was preoccupied with smiting someone else.
6 There was a man, one not sent from God, whose name was John.
7 This man was a renowned chemist, which means he took two or more things and combined them, so that they did something different from when the things were separate. This man resided in the western region of the land of Virginia, a primitive area overrun by hillbillys.
8 He was also an unbeliever, as Tominmo had been before. And he heaped great scorn upon the faithful of the Lord. Therefore the Lord wished to smite him greatly, for it was a slow day in Heaven, and the Lord wanted to liven things up a bit.
9 And when the Lord had finished smiting John, the unbelieving chemist, and had a bit of lunch, he turned to the Archangel Michael and said, Huh?
10 For he was mindful of what Michael had been trying to tell him before, when he was busy with the smiting.
11 The Archangel Michael then saith unto the Lord, This man Zanzer is most deserving of Thy attention, Lord. For he is cruel, and pretentiously affects an air of mystery. And I saw him googling Smart cars last week.
12 And the Lord saith unto Michael, OK, nice; have his file on my desk tomorr....but Michael had it with him already, and handed it to the Lord.
13 The Lord read the file and saith unto Himself, Oh wow, we've got a live one here. Memo to Self: extra week's vacation for Mike next millennium. For the Lord was also both generous and just, besides liking smiting.
14 So the Lord did smite Zanzer the cruel, such that everyone throughout the land thought his name was Fluffy. And Zanzer did wail and gnash his teeth until the end of his days, for he knew the Lord had smote him a good one.
