  • 93 GL wont accelerate

93 festiva GL 1.3 Hot or cold engine runs with power for the first minute or so, then, no power, it will stay running but wont accelerate. What I do while still rolling is turn the key off and on real fast and then the power is back for a minute or so. Just keep doing this till you get home. This solution is for a festiva/mazda guy help! I will take any and all phone calls and even buy lunch. John 815-465-6604
Replaced brain, vap or “vaf”,map, fuel pressure regulator, injectors tps, iac,,fuel relay ,high speed relay, igniter, condenser (capacitor) .coil. complete distributor included was the crankshaft positioning sensor, cap, wires, rotor, 02 sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, radiator temp sensor, engine temp sensor. checked timing belt, checked crank and cam alignment. Main relay sounds like its working. Replaced all vacuums, cant find any vacuum leaks on intake. Tried adjusting the TPS, Attempted to adjust tming but was never able to get the marks near the timing guage. Running out of things to replace

noticed the only thing NOT replaced is the cat...

can you freely rev the engine in nutral AFTER the issue shows up?

If you have a plugged cat, you can remove the o2 sensor and drive it to see if the problem goes away. It will relieve the pressure build up if the cat is clogged

Sorry guys forgot to mention, I have already removed the cat, and tried it without the O2 at different times

Maybe I should also mention. I have the original brain and I bought a used brain. Both have the same result. I know its possible both brains are bad...but what are the odds, considering what they cost new.

so really all you have been doing is throwing expensive parts at the problem hoping one will stick? that has bad idea written all over it.

first you need to explain the problem with as much detail as possible. then you need to answer any questions (like mine) with detail as well. also any tests results you have to give are IMPORTANT.

Sorry trying to explain it as best as possible, I forgot to mention "no cat". I would talk to b people along the way and they would say..Oh Im sure its this or Oh its that. before you know it your running out of things to replace. I should mention the to drive it now I have pulled out the engine fuse and stuck to wired spades in there and it makes it easier to switch on and off while Im rolling. I also tried a starter solenoid with a flasher unit so I wouldnt have to switch anything but the solenoid kept overheating. I do have a concern though, the distributor I took off was a .475" so I replaced it with a .475" is it possible it could be the .526" distributor. This car had this problem when I traded for it so anything is possible. How do I tell If this motor uses the .475" or the .526" distributor because this will greatly effect the crankshaft timing

what the...!? what measurement are you refering to? i ask because i have carb and EFI festys and the dizzy fits in both and the outer components are interchangeable.

so start from the begining: walk us through what happens when you start the engine first thing in the morning and then how it's running condition changes and in what time frame this happens.

When I purchased the distibutor from Advanced Auto. They asked if it was the .475" or the.526" Where the rotor connects to the distributor its a triangle. The .475" has three equal sides on the .526" it has two equal sides and one side that measures .526" I believe this might be specific to the 93 GL. He wouldnt sell it to me until I brought my old one in to measure.

first time I start it in the morning I drive away and has plenty of power to climb hills stop and go...after about two minutes, it will stay running fine, at an idle but wont allow me accelerate, to climb hills and stop and go. So what Ive figured out " while the vehicle is still rolling and running in gear" is if I turn the key off and on real fast I am able to accelerate, climb hills and stop and go for two minutes, then I have to do it over and over till I get where Im going. This happens if the vehicle is hot or cold and it even does it when the car is not moving, while in park.
