    NOte: do NOT pry on the tab of the speedo gear, it WILL break. you want to twist the assembly back and forth while gently pulling upward.

    Also, if you look at the pic provided above, the knerled (sp) part just below the end of the cable is the bottom of the cable assembly (not the gear assembly) and once loosened, will allow the cable to come free, just pull straight up and flex the rest of the cable out of the way. once that is done you can access the actual wire that does all the twisting and drives the speedo. Pull it out. there should be a crimped tab on one end (at the gear assembly) and the other end should be pressed into a square. if it doesn't look like that, it's broken.

      That thing is a pain to get off because of the o ring. I broke the tab on my '93 and had to use a big washer in it's place.
