The trans has notches (detents) for every gear. So does the shifter. Make sure they match. You can see the shifter detents if the cover is removed. The trans detents must be felt. My manual says put both in neutral and move those 2 nuts on the cable (left side of shifter) until both trans and shifter are exactly centered in their detents.
