it revs way up when i start it and i can still make it go higher with the pedal but i can not get it to go any lower. i have backed the idle screw almost all the way out so i know thats not it. i had a broken servo that i replaced which i originally thought was the problem but it still does the same thing. the way it happened was i started it up in my driveway this morning and it started and everything just fine then i get a ways down the street and all of a sudden it just started to rev way too high. i was going a steady 40 in 4th without even touching the gas. im thinking it may be a vacuum malfunction somewhere but i dont even know where to start. any help will be greatly appreciated...for now its 11 mpg in the ol truck.

look for vak leaks at the brake booster/lines and at the IAC lines.Trees aren't kind to me...

i have tried all of the above. can not find any vacuum leaks or disconnected lines. im thinking it could be the choke. how can i disconnect the choke to eliminate that being the possible problem. just disconnect it from the alt?Comment

If it is a carby, take the top of the air cleaner off and see if the choke flap is still closed after warm up. If it is, then the choke and/or fast idle linkage is sticking.Comment

ok. i was figuring on a EFI car... if you have a carbie, you need to look at the base gasket first.Trees aren't kind to me...

See if the idle screw behind the carb is closing against the stop. If not, cable is binding and needs lube or replacement.Comment

Try plugging in the block heater for an hour before starting. That reduces choke. Also as soon as the engine fires pump the gas pedal a few times to release the choke.
