  • Feels like a rev limiter at about 2500... sometimes

'90 L-Plus, factory motor, swapped to a 5 speed from an auto (it did this both before and after the swap)

This is a pretty intermittent problem, and when it does pop up, I can kill the motor for literally one second, then fire it back up and its good to go for a while. Tried swapping the coil today with the known good one from Green Car, but it still does it. I haven't gotten the ignition module yet since I was in a hurry this morning and it was raining and I couldn't find my phillips bit for my screwdriver... lol. But I'm really getting annoyed by this since its the only thing keeping me from driving Chuck daily. He's good enough for getting to and from my day job, but on my pizza days I can't have him choking out every few minutes. Still pulls strong up to ~2500ish (no tach in it at the moment, but thats what it was doing back before I switched the cluster into Babystiva) but that point it just falls on its face. I can still drive it when it does it, just have to shift at 2500 because it won't get past that. Any guesses? In neutral when its doing it, I can mash the gas to the floor and it will rev up to 2500 and just bounce, just like I used to bounce it off of 7200 with the BP lol. Cap, rotor and plugs are new (haven't done wires yet, they weren't in stock). I've switched fuel pumps with Green Car (known good) and that didn't help, and the fuel filter is less than two years old. Any guesses?

Is it running any richer/leaner when this happens? I know on the early 90 Rangers/Bronco II's they would start running rich and cut out and you could turn it off and right back on and run awesome for another 10 mins or so and then it would happen again. If I remember right the o2 sensor was the culprit since turning the key off and then on would make the car run in an open loop again.

Ooh! Good call, I'd been meaning to pick up an O2 sensor anyway, and that sounds plausible since it usually doesn't do it till I get a few mins down the road. I had another manifold with a brand new O2 on it that I was going to use, but I put that on Green Car instead. Completely forgot to get a new on. Thanks for the tip/reminder, and even if that doesn't fix it, it needed a new one anyway.

Definately get that O2 taken care of. That's flushing MPG down the toilet too.

Ordered one today, should be here in the morning. The one in there currently is less than two years old, but it is a Bosch. I had a Denso in it when her cousin got it a couple years back, but I guess whoever worked on it while her cousin had it changed it out. I'll put a Denso back in and see what happens.

Check the neutral safety switch. I had an auto that did the same thing. It thought it was in park at certain times.

I just made a jumper wire and put it in and it went away.

            Hope this helps

Hmmm... I have a jumper wire in the plug that goes to the park switch actually from where it was swapped from an auto. So it probably thinks its in park ALL the time. But then again, this is a recurring problem even from back before the swap. I guess I should get that plugged up to the clutch switch though.

I personally hate our 1 wire o2 sensors anyway Same as with older toyota's. I converted my aspire to a 3 when i had it. Even if the sensor itself is great that wire and its connection is fragile and it can get screwed up. Hope you figure it out.

Htchbck, check your coil tower and make sure it's not arcing onto the body of the coil (loosing spark). Pepe did that for a while till i insulated the tower and body. that lasted for a bit, but i eventually had to wire in a new SuperStock coil (OE style replacement is $120).

Already swapped a known good coil from Green Car and it changed nothing. Plus, a lightning fast flip of the key off and back on cures it for about five mins.

Hello Hatchbck, you said it was raining. Does the problem seem worse in the dampness? That would be a sure sign of the spark grounding at a poor connection? (ie ,cracked wire insulation) I'm really curious if the o2 sens fix's your problem. Cuz I've read that the o2 sens just "Trims" the final ratio of fuel. So if its bad enough to flood out a engine to the point that it cant out of its own way... Well that would make me think thats a very large "Trim Range". But Like festyboy said, Ign Coil sounds like it might very well be an issue here. Plz keep us in the loop

IT IS NOT THE COIL. PERIOD. I've had tried two known good coils and no change.

That settled, could be the wires maybe, I'll try to pick some up tomorrow if they are in stock (plugs are new, as is disty cap and rotor). But no, doesn't matter if its damp, hot, cold rainy, just happened to be raining this morning which kept me from getting the ignition module to swap. Hopefully will do that in the morning. I'll keep posted on the problem and ultimate solution.

When i first wired up my V6, i accidently deleted the coolant temp sensor, on a fresh start up, it would feel like a rev limiter at around 5500rpm (obviously higher then your car) but it only did it for a few times, then it would clear itself out (ran pig rich though)

After i got the coolant temp sensor hooked back up, it solved the problem..... this may not be your issue, but just a different perspective then saying "it's the coil"

Now that Damnkid mentions that I remember on Direct Hit when trying to solve that problem on a Ranger that some confirmed fixes were for the temp sensor when dealing with the same symptoms so that might be a good start if you have one handy to swap and see. Although I don't think cycling the key would have the computer ignore the temp sensor but I'm not sure of the operation.

The trim range must be pretty large because I've seen Chevys run pig rich pluming black smoke from bad o2 sensors.
