  • Leaving Puddles on the ground

Well maybe not puddles, but quarter sized drops of oil and coolant. It's coming from the front of the motor (or passenger side, where the crank pulley etc are). It also sounds like crickets chirping when it runs and changes with RPM. My guess for the noise is the water pump. I'm guessing this is a pain to do. If I'm going to do it, what all should I get? I figure I might as well put a new timing belt on. What other seals etc? Do I sound right about it being the water pump? Thanks! Oh yea, it's an 88 LX, carbed, 5 speed with A/C.

Bad water pump will emit coolant only. Run it with the top cover off and see if it comes out the weep hole in the water pump.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Only other item I'd buy when doing the timing belt/water pump is a new front crank seal. Its really not too terrible to do, just get a jack up under the motor and take the pass side motor mount OFF (not just unbolt from car, but take it all the way off). That gives you a little more room to work and the ability to both raise the engine to get at the water pump and lower it to get at the main crank bolt.

This is assuming you are loosing coolant from the pump and probably oil from the crank seal.
      No festiva for me ATM...

Chirping can be alternator belt or bearings. A lot simpler to remedy than water pump.
I find a length of hose makes a good stethescope for locating noises.

Mine had the same noise, only when operating temp. Water pump would be the best bet, I would recommend a new timing belt tensioner pulley also.
Im not driving a Festiva because I'm poor. I drive a Festiva because i want to!

Might as well do it all. Belt, pulley, pump, camshaft seal, front crank seal.

Maybe you could just put some Harley Davidson badges on it and call it good

It could be worse!!!!! But if you do it right the first time you'll be able to have fun in your free time and won't be fixing stuff you should have the first time!

So I need to get the water pump, timing belt &tensioner, cam seal and crank seal. Anything else? Gaskets for the timing cover?

valve cover gasket. And copper gasket spray for the waterpump and valve cover gaskets. also you'll want some BLUE loctite for the crank bolt.

OK, I still haven't done this! Needs to be done soon. I just wanted to make sure I have everything before its started. I noticed a lot of oil on the oil pan as well, so maybe an oil pan gasket as well? Here's my list so far:

                            Water Pump and gasket
                            Timing belt and tensioner
                            Front crank seal
                            Cam seal
                            Valve cover gasket
                            Oil pan gasket?

Also need a passenger side axle and need to put these rack mount bushings in. Anything else?

Quarter sized oil puddles on the passenger side can be oil drain plug.
Sometime the washer can fall into the pan used to drain the oil and be lost.
Happened to me. Replacement drain plug stopped the leak.

If you don't mind me saying, I think you're going to a lot of trouble to address a
drip and a squeal which are most likely caused by one or two parts, not a whole bunch.

The oil drip is not a problem unless you have to keep adding oil. I didn't replace mine until a few oil changes
later when I finally got to the store and bought a new dain plug.
