This is a generic item so I searched the Internet. I found adivice on why and how but not when. My Festiva owner's manual says don't adjust the valves unless they are noisy. My Festiva, being a small car, is naturally noisy. Do valves have a characteristic noise I can listen for? Is there some other symptom of loose valves I can look for? I hooked up a hand held vacuum guage and the needle is rock solid. No movment to suggest any valve or other engine problems. I was doing a minor tuneup today and could not decide if the engine was more nolisy than usual or not. I should spend more time under the hood getting to know to sound of the engine. Thanks.

You can check/adjust them whenever or as often as you want, although it may not always need it. If they are too far out of adjustment your power & MPG can suffer slightly. It sounds like it's never been done on your car (at least to your knowledge), so I would probably adjust them. When I had my '79 Fiesta, I used to check & adjust them once a year (usually in the spring)Brian
