What's the best way to loosen the big axle nuts on my Festy without damaging something if I don't have an air impact wrench?

  • #2
Use a breaker bar, 18" or so, and have someone press on the brake petal.
An impact wrench is not too expensive now, for a corded unit anyway, and it is a very useful device.
    Bought mine 25 years ago.
One of the best tools I own.

Best if you do it before removing wheels. Block tire and use breaker bar and 1 and 1/8th socket.

May not be 1 1/8", have had axle nuts from 28mm to 32mm.

One more thing..........do the axle nuts have a left or right hand thread?

Axle nuts all all right hand threaded they are interchangeable and not specific to a left or right axle.

Just to clarify for noobs, here we are discussing the axle nuts on the CV axles, not the rear axle nuts. The rear ones are normal thread on the left side, and reverse thread on the right side.

Just to clarify a little more, the nuts on the rear of a festiva attach to a spindel (not a hub).
And they are, if OEM, right hand threaded on the driverside and left hand threaded on the passenger side, as TominMO says above.

I often have to use not just a breaker bar of 18" plus, but also sometimes an extension for the bar! A total of about 2 to 2.5 feet usually works. Give the nut and CV end a squirt of PB Blaster first, too.

I am too skert to try this method...usually. I always fear that the threads will get boogered up if I apply too much force.
