What's the best way to loosen the big axle nuts on my Festy without damaging something if I don't have an air impact wrench?

Use a breaker bar, 18" or so, and have someone press on the brake petal.
An impact wrench is not too expensive now, for a corded unit anyway, and it is a very useful device.
Bought mine 25 years ago.

Axle nuts all all right hand threaded they are interchangeable and not specific to a left or right axle.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

Just to clarify a little more, the nuts on the rear of a festiva attach to a spindel (not a hub).
And they are, if OEM, right hand threaded on the driverside and left hand threaded on the passenger side, as TominMO says above.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

I often have to use not just a breaker bar of 18" plus, but also sometimes an extension for the bar! A total of about 2 to 2.5 feet usually works. Give the nut and CV end a squirt of PB Blaster first, too.
