  • Boost at 5k

I'm not getting full boost in 3rd gear until 5k rpms with this vj11/thunderbird turbo and can't make the cool vroom pssh bov noise in neutral

I think the wastegate is not holding shut because of the weak bracket I made in a rush.

What is the normal rpm and full boost range with this turbo?

Definitely sounds like a wastegate issue to me, if you suspect the bracket to be weak, I'd start by fixing that

As for not making boost in neutral, since there's no load on the engine while revving in neutral, it's hard to make any boost to get the BOV sound, so that sounds normal

Ok, I fixed the wastegate bracket. I didn't take into consideration that the wastegate needs to be pre loaded.

But.. It only helped a couple hundred rpms and today got even worse. Damn Turbo XS Rfl bov is leaking BADDD.

Another problem is that when I had the boost leak tester on, the fuel line was hissing? I can grab it and clench it a little bit and it will stop. What is this? It's never done this before.

Split in the line. Or leaking at the o ring. I am not a fan of bovs like I used to
You can use a dsm or volvo bypass valve and it let your snail vent and slealthy

Out of frustration I went out and put on the stock bov. Same super slow spooling again but it's backfiring a lot now. Tomorrow my friend is coming over and we will try and troubleshoot it.

check for cracks in your turbo manifold.

I've had a hairline crack for a while now, maybe it finally started to leak.

Is the power out of boost the same as always? Let's hope it's just a bad connection or the crack bleeding boost. 1 thing that happens when you have a nasty leak is the boost gauge needle vibrates as it espooling

Not Bad for using the android voice text I like the spanglish spooling, had to leave that one

The springs in wastegates come in a lot of different pressure ratings, then you've got your tired old wastegate springs situation which is an all together different problem.
Disconnect the wastegate pressure tube (block it off) a make a couple of easy runs like that. This will make the spring do all of the work then with no help from the pressure. But if the spring is too weak, it will still let the waste gate open somewhat.
Then you can tie it (the wastegate) down and make a run like that.

when my bpt starts backfiring, i take the manifold off, and sure enough, have to have it rewelded. problem fixed.

On some manifolds you can get a crack at the flapper which you cant detect unless you take it all apart too. Good luck, hope the solution is cheap and you experience little downtime.
