  • Detonation?

My festiva makes this strange noise when I rev it. I noticed that the noise gets louder when I advance my timing. The only way to get the noise to go completely away is when I turn my distributor almost all the way back and end up at TDC. Last time I tested my compression it came up as 180 on all 4 cylinders, is this the sound of detonation? I am going to try higher octane later today when I fill up, but right now I am running regular. If I retard the timing so the noise goes away, the car looses almost all of its power.

You shouldn't run advanced timing without proper fuel (91-93 octane)

Does it sound like marbles rolling around in a coffee can? I would start by making sure your fuel filter isn't partially plugged and you don't have any vacuum or post-VAF air leaks.

I'm not running it for prolonged time, only to test it for the noise. I'm about to pump 89 or 91 right now to see if it will help.

you shouldn't have that dizzy cranked that far advance for one thing. 2-4* advance is normal for our engines (the carbies run at 0* advance). try steam cleaning your engine with some Seafoam through the intake, you may have some carbon buildup that is exasterbating the problem.
