My festiva makes this strange noise when I rev it. I noticed that the noise gets louder when I advance my timing. The only way to get the noise to go completely away is when I turn my distributor almost all the way back and end up at TDC. Last time I tested my compression it came up as 180 on all 4 cylinders, is this the sound of detonation? I am going to try higher octane later today when I fill up, but right now I am running regular. If I retard the timing so the noise goes away, the car looses almost all of its power.

Does it sound like marbles rolling around in a coffee can? I would start by making sure your fuel filter isn't partially plugged and you don't have any vacuum or post-VAF air leaks.Brian

you shouldn't have that dizzy cranked that far advance for one thing. 2-4* advance is normal for our engines (the carbies run at 0* advance). try steam cleaning your engine with some Seafoam through the intake, you may have some carbon buildup that is exasterbating the problem.Trees aren't kind to me...
