You shouldn't hear the fuel pump relay (it's under the dash) when you turn the key unless the self-test connector is jumped. It's probably the main relay (under the hood) you're hearing. Some of the info I put in post #12 is incorrect. if you hear the under-dash relay click, 12V should be going to the pump. The pump grounds through the inertia switch so make sure it is not popped. It's behind the drivers side rear panel. If you get a relay click and still no pump, the pump is probably bad. Before you buy a pump you can test for 12V at pump connector. There are 4 wires. I'll have to check manual for colors. If no relay click, relay or associated wiring is faulty. Never heard of this happening.

I have had the short harness on top of the gas tank go bad, but it was causing weird intermittent starting problems so it was really hard to hunt down. It is an uncommon problem but it can happen.

look for burnt or discolored connectors along that harness.

How hard is the fuel pump to actually change ? Just pop the square panel and lift it out ?

Just above brake booster . Actually a couple good hits under the center of the rear seat might get it running again . Worked for me .
New build on the way .

Runner, open the hatch and look under the speaker grille on the left side of the cargo area. There should be a cutout in the rear strut tower cover. There's a red button in there. That's the switch.

The pump is pretty straight forward to replace. Once you get in to it, you shouldn't have much of a problem. All you need is a phillips screwdriver and a pair of pliers to get it out of the car.

While we're on the market for a new pump, anyone have a cheaper alternative / cross compatibility knowledge? Aspire, 323, Escort, Universal...?

                              I know rockauto.com has lots of options/warranties/prices.

I just bought an Airtex 8023 for $26 on ebay. It had the wrong strainer but they refunded $12, the cost of the right one. There are plenty on ebay for under $30 with the right strainer. Make sure you remove gas cap or gas will run out of hose connection.
