  • 1989 festiva will not idle

will run all day if you keep giving it gas.I bought the car to replace my 91crx-si as my daily driver and the po had removed all t he emission stuff.i did not know that untill i sent the carb off to cali to have rebuilt then i saw the missing parts so i rounded them up and installed.been looking for months for help on how all the vacuum lines run still not sure if right.but car had the idle problem when i first got it only has 109,000miles on it and is a tn car so no rust in great shape just need to fix the idle,i drive 100plus miles daily mon-fri and need this car in tip top shape help please and thanks

I would recommend not wasting any time or money on the stock feeback carb. I recommend an Escort or Weber carb replacement. You will not need to replace any vacuum lines.

It's impossible to tell from the vac diagram where the fat hoses go. Let me go peek at my '89.

The front fat hose goes to a metal pipe then onto the exhaust flange. The rear fat hose goes to a metal pipe that goes under the car probably to the cat. Do you have all the metal pipes?

he'd need a carb specific downpipe to hook up that front fat hose. i'm betting he has either an u resolved vac leak, OR the base idle is set too low.

have not messed with the idle screw because the place that rebuilt the carb are suppose to test each carb on a stock engine and set to stock specs

you can't use their settings, their "engine" is different than yours (wear, compression, ignition). set the warm idle to 650 with the white idle set screw.

If the single wire plug in is missing off your alt
because somebody put on the wrong alt. You can
wire the choke to the fuel shut off solenoid on the
carb for the time being. It will open a hair quicker
but at least work. If your metal pipes are missing
you can run hose all the way, or bend up new metal
tubing. You do have the little control solenoid
                      and the reed valves ?

'89 is an oddball year only if it is an automatic. Manuals are same as '88 which is only available as manual. Can you try to get those pipes at a junkyard? Is your flange missing something?

You require a tach dwell meter to set your idle.

You can purchase a hand held tachometer. I found mine at a garage sale, and old tach/dwell meter from the days before fuel injection and trasistorized points.
