  • wipers work when they want to

I'm about to pick up a '90 festiva. Wipers are unpredictable. Rode to the gas station in the rain, wipers wear dead. After airing up a low tire(dry rot). I got in it, fired the car up, and the wipers worked fine. Any ideas why its doing this?

Bad ground? Loose connection? Electrical problems need a multimeter or test light to troubleshoot.

Next time try wiggling the switch back and forth, then leave it on and try tapping and wiggling on the wiper motor..if the flintstone methods fail to identify the culprit you
will need to get at least a test light.

Ignition switch. Mine did this too, but seems to have eventually healed itself. Wipers (and blower motor IIRC) wouldn't work until I turned the ignition switch clockwise a tiny bit more.

That has to be it. The blower motor was dead too, but assumed it was a bad blower motor resistor. Thankyou for the help. I'll change the switch asap.

I had the same problem. Spray WD-40 or contact cleaner into the keyhole in the ignition switch. Wiggle the key in and out. That will fix it for a few years then it has to be done again.
