So if it's not one thing it's another.. now my mazda try's to overheat, I say try because it doesn't actually go over the H mark, it hovers between half and the 1/8th mark below the H.

For anyone that doesn't know, the car has a long history.. I fixed it after it sat for 3 years, new fuel pump, new timing belt, new water pump, new radiator and fan, new thermostat, new plugs and wires, new caliper and replaced parts of the rear brake lines, new front bumper and headlights, new...

the last problem was it was throwing a couple codes, o2 sensor/misfire cyl 2, I replaced the injector on cyl 2 and it's running fine now, the codes went away on their own. Now about a month or so later it "trys" to overheat.

I start the car, let it run for a minute, and take off down the road, it warms up like usual and drives fine for a couple miles, then all of a sudden the temp gauge will shoot up to below the H mark while driving 55 mph, and stay there.

Any ideas? I was thinking head gasket, since it blows out white smoke until it warms up, but it quits blowing out smoke when it's warm, and there isn't any water in the oil. It uses about half a quart of oil a month, and has a small water leak somewhere still after I've replaced most of the water related components, and I can't see where it's leaking, not that I've really tried to find it or anything.

Everything in this paragraph sounds like you may have a crack in the HG between a cylinder and a water jacket. Have you tried a compression test to see if any of the cylinders look low?

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

haha.. i probably would try if there was one close, with a good 5 speed transmission and axels..

this car has the cd4e batavia transmission. it hasn't given me any problems, but it does kick a little bit when you shift gears, and that's the first signs of the tranny going bad. It's not worth a new motor for more than a couple hundred bucks since the tranny is probably on its' way out too... imo

results are in from the compression test, 125/100/99/124

Maybe Chris is right about it being kl time then lol. Tried a wet comp test to determine if you're losing comp through the rings or elsewhere?

The compression loss by itself shouldn't cause over heating, the trapped air
in the head will. Burp the air out and see if it will last a few trips.

That is a easy headgasket repair if it comes to that.

I've had to add so much water to this car I wouldn't doubt that's the problem, before when it had a masive water leak I never had to burp the air out, and it would leak clear down to the water pump level every time you shut it down, never overheated either.

If one of my camshafts were off a tooth, it.would probably cause low compression wouldn't it? Would it cause overheating? The car seems to run fine, just runs hot..

Camshaft off would cause all tests to produce equal results between cylinders.
Your compression results kind of indicate a warped head between the middle cylinders,
2 and 3. Possible gasket early failure because compression of gasket material between cylinders has lightened to the point gasses are shuttling between cylinders, but have not torched the gasket itself....yet. Wet and dry tests, upper end cleaning/carbon
removal are in order before tear down, unless additional symptoms are presented.

I doubt I'll do anything with it for awhile, probably just let it sit..don't really care, I just want to get my aspire on the road. If anything, it would probably even be as cost effective and easy to get the motor from the JY 99 626 with the 2.0 and swap it with this pos.. the jy motor has been there for almost a year now, so it hasn't even sat as long as this one did.
