If I'm not replacing the clutch is it necessary to replace the rear main seal? I just really don't wanna pull off more than necessary as my clutch I only about 10,000 mi old.... also one of my cars had de/mercIII atf and the other had some kind of gear oil... What should I refill the transmissions with when I'm done? Thanks

So long as the rear main still holds oil in the block you don't really have to mess with it. It's a good preventive measure to knock it out when you're in there just because 90% of the work getting to it is already done.
So far as atf vs gear oil is concerned there is some debate about which one to use. I used atf for a couple years without any trouble. I just switched over to gearlube after doing some trans work on my cars. My input shaft bearings were toasted. Not a result of the oil, but because of 210k miles in wear on sealed bearings. It had the factory fill for 180k. Gear oil results in generally quieter operation but increased shift effort when cold. The recommended gear oil is 75w-90. There's a lot less synchronizer noise with gear oil. Here's a few good threads about gear lube vs atf.
