  • Speedometer driven gear removal - HELP!

I'm going by the book. (Section 1-20) I removed the speedometer cable. Then I removed the retaining bolt. (That secures the drive gear assembly to the transaxle. It says to just remove the drive gear assembly from the transaxle, but it won't budge! What can I do? Please help quick!

Twist, pull, cuss, scream, and shout. Don't forget to hold your tongue pressed to your left cheek, almost but not quite biting down.

Maybe spraying a little PB Blaster around the edges, and wait for it to sink in?

It takes a lot of patience and trying, basically. I tried to wedge a screwdriver under the tab once, it started to come out, and then broke that tab off. Don't try that!

Goshdarn! Too late! now I have a broken tab, and it still won't come out. I'm going to soak it in PB blaster. Any other ideas? What is this part called at Autozone to go get another one?

yeah its a stupid design... not to mention you have to fill the trans fluid from there. totally convenient if you want trans fluid all over the place.

i think i ended up grabbing it with some needle nose pliers. after tapping it with some tools and a shot of PB blaster.
glad to see someone else from utah ! good luck

I think that will be a junkyard/forum purchase. It will still work for a while though.

Try grabbing the body with some vice grips, twist and pull. Once you get it to twist, it will start to come out. Make real sure you are getting ahold of it right at the base, not higher up.

And before an admin sees it, edit that Sonova part

Wow, couldn't wait the 6 minutes for a reply before you proceed to break something!
I guess you really did mean "help quick"!

And Scitzz is right, you're headed to the JY or posting a [WTB] here because they don't make these anymore!

You only have 15-20 mins to do your editing then it's locked.
I fixed it, but you need to re-read these please:

                    I suspected as much.
Generally, you don't absolutely need to use the hold down tab and bolt, but it's a good idea.
As Scitzz said hit it with some PB Blaster and let it soak in.
Then use a set of channel locks/vise grips etc to gain some leverage and work the assembly back and forth.
Try not to chew the aluminum assembly up with the steel tool.
Maybe wrap it with a cloth.
Once it starts to move hit it again with more PB blaster.
After it starts to move freely, try by hand to move it back and forth while pulling upward.
Before it pops out make sure the area around it is clean, you do not want crud falling to your tranny.

I broke the tab off of mine so I ground a little arc in a washer to hold it down with the bolt.

I turn it with a pliers. Have to back-and-forth it a bit. But recently I made a "tool" out of the threaded part on the cable that screws onto the tranny gear piece. I just screw it on and turn that with a pliers, so that I don't break the speedo gear housing.

Try turning the engine over as you work it out?
Mine has always moved but still takes time and patience to coax out of the transmission.
And back in. You've got that to look forward to was well.
