  • Well, there's your problem.....

Couldn't figure out why I still have vibration above 60 MPH in my Aspire. Left tie rod and tie rod end were replaced just before I bought it; I replaced the right-side ones myself. Put new GR2s on the front, and new LCAs too. Still vibrates. CV axles were also replaced just before I bought it. I did the alignment (string method), and it's spot on.

But today I went to look under the car and noticed that the pass. side CV does not have a balancer on it! Not even a groove for it to go on. I suspect the new CVs are cheapos, maybe even used units with new boots, since the left tie rod stuff the shop put on is also super cheap. PO was a young woman who owned it since new. I suspect she sold it when these issues didn't get fixed and she didn't want to throw more $$ at the car (she bought a new car). Pass. side axle seal is also leaking.

So off to get new parts and (probably) fix the issue.

I would say probably not. Front axles typically do not spin fast enough to cause any kind of vibration unless there is a problem in the joint itself.

They don't even bother to balance these shafts from the factory! That rubber "balancer" might help some but I've installed many axles that didn't come with that and never ran into a problem as a result.

Mine was doing some strange vibrations when I got above 50. I didn't get it above 45 for several months until I had to visit my dad frequently at the hospital. It was a rhythmic vibration (b-b-b-bum...... mmmmmmm.... b-b-b-bum..... mmmmmmm) and not a constant vibration.. very strange! By the time I would hit 60 mph it was impossible to maintain control it was that bad!

I rotated the two right side tires (I knew the RF wheel was bent just a tad) but that made no difference. Then I rotated the left side tires and the vibration went away. This tells me the problem was in what is now the LR tire.

A few days later I put that tire on the balancer. It had plenty of tread and no play in the wheel and the tire was straight as an arrow! It didn't even require any weights! Well I wasn't satisfied with that so I broke down the tire and immediately found the problem... it had about TWO GALLONS of water inside of it.

I have no idea how it got there but it was there nonetheless. I cleaned it all out and ground the rust off of the bead surface of the wheel (and treated the bare metal to some black engine paint I had). Then I installed a new valve stem (nice shiny chrome metal one!) along with the old tire and rebalanced it.

Then I put that back on the LF where it was originally and no more vibration! I ended up doing the same thing to the other three tires but none of them had any water.

<shrug> strange but at least it was a cheap fix...

When I spin one of my tires I hear something rolling around in there. I tell myself it's bits of rubber and ignore it.

Have you balanced your tires since you bought the car, it could just be something that simple.

I took these tires off my other Aspire SE, which I sold to Arty. They were fine on that car.

But based on wut MasterTec sed, maybe it snot the axle and I should just go get my tires checked anyhoo. I have a full set of brand new and mounted snow tires I can put on, and see if it goes away with them. Or just replace one tire at a time, to try to isolate it to a particular tire.

I'd say balance the tires. That's usually where most of the issues lye.
